For the past few years, we've been trying to eliminate chemicals from our home. I didn't think about all of the toxins we were exposed to until we had our first child. Between the foods we eat, clothes we wear, and places we rest our head, we're bombarded with unnatural things on a daily basis. Recently, I started to research non-toxic mattresses because I became aware of the chemicals and fire retardants used by more mainstream brands. Since we spend ⅓ of our lives sleeping, it's probably one of the more important places to eliminate toxins if you can. I've partnered with My Green Mattress to share why you should consider a non-toxic mattress.
Reasons to Buy a Non-Toxic Mattress
One of the main concerns I had when reading about typical mattresses is that they often contain formaldehyde, polyurethane foam, pesticides, and flame-retardant chemicals. Some of the health issues associated with these chemicals include asthma, allergies, lung and skin irritation, and even cancer. They can also delay puberty, disrupt the thyroid, and cause neuro-developmental changes. When I considered my children, whom I try to protect at all costs, there was no question that we needed to switch to a non-toxic mattress. In fact, I am a little horrified that we've had them sleeping on conventional mattresses their whole lives.
We actually purchased a brand new mattress while I was pregnant with our son, which was about two years ago. Since he was born, he's been much more susceptible to respiratory illness than our daughter (who slept on an old, off-gassed mattress) and I can't help but wonder if sleeping on that brand new mattress didn't have something to do with it. I've also been kicking myself because we spent more on that mattress than a natural, non-toxic mattress costs from My Green Mattress. When we recently decided to make the switch, I was beyond thrilled that My Green Mattress agreed to partner with me.
My Green Mattress Review - Natural Escape
My Green Mattress started up when one of the owner's daughters suffered from eczema and allergies. Upon doing some research, he determined that making lifestyle changes to eliminate chemicals and toxins would be beneficial. And so, My Green Mattress was born! With years of mattress making under his belt, it was just the switch to non-toxic materials that needed to happen. Since then, My Green Mattress has expanded to include multiple non-toxic mattresses as well as bedding and mattress toppers.
Because we co-sleep, we have a king-sized bed. There's no way we'd fit otherwise, with all the flailing limbs! We chose to upgrade to the Natural Escape mattress for a few reasons. My husband and I are both side sleepers, and it's just become normal for us to wake up a bit achy and to have sore backs. The thing is, that's NOT normal! We determined that neither of us do well sleeping on a thick plush bed, and that we both need a slightly firmer mattress. The Natural Escape mattress has just enough give, and is the perfect amount of firm. Upon a recommendation from the FAQ section, we're going to rotate it once a month for the first six months. The handles on the sides are perfect for this (but not for picking the mattress up!).
The mattress is made up of a few different layers. First, there's a pocketed coil system, with heavier gauge coils around the perimeter and across ⅓ of the middle of the mattress for lumbar support. On top of that, there are three inches of GOLS-certified organic, all-natural Dunlop latex. For the topper, the Natural Escape mattress has a GOTS-certified organic cotton natural wool quilted cover. Because wool is a natural flame barrier, it passes flame testing without any toxic flame retardant chemicals. It's given a firmness level of 6.5-10 which I would say is accurate. It's neither soft nor hard, but (as Goldilocks would say!) just right!
Our mattress came compressed and rolled up (isn't it crazy how they can do that?). We (okay, my husband) brought it upstairs and we took off the packaging to let it expand. Unlike other mattresses we've gotten, we didn't have to let it off-gas or keep it in the garage for a week before we were willing to sleep on it. We experienced little to no smell at all. If there was a smell, it was just a very light sheep-y scent that went away within a few minutes of unboxing.
Overall Thoughts
I can't begin to say how pleased we've been with our sleep on the Natural Escape mattress. Not only is it comfortable, we also seem to sleep cooler which means we wake better rested. Our son has been waking up less throughout the night which is great news for me! Probably the biggest improvement we've tangibly noticed is the change in back pain for both me and my husband. I honestly planned for a two-week adjustment period where our spines realigned after sleeping on thick plush, but since the first night, we have both experienced a huge improvement in back pain! I actually haven't had any soreness since we started using the mattress. My husband, who is an electrician and pretty much always has aches and pains, has felt a noticeable improvement. He believes it will continue to improve.
Best of all, I feel SO much better about all of us sleeping on this mattress, especially our kids. As a parent, I want nothing more than to provide them with the safest environment for their little bodies to thrive, and I feel like sleeping on a non-toxic mattress is a huge improvement over our previous mattress. You know, I was curious about latex allergies as I was working on this post, because my brother has a latex allergy too and I was wondering if that would be a problem if he wanted one of their mattresses! On the FAQs I did find this info:
