Dumbo is one of our favorite Disney classics, and we wanted to commemorate it in a special way this year. We made this adorable Dumbo Christmas Ornament from my daughter's little handprint to create a cute Christmas keepsake.
Dumbo Christmas Ornament
I remember the first time I saw Dumbo as a child. It was instant love and I couldn't wait to share that Disney magic with my kids. To my delight, they love it too. If you want to capture the handprints of your own little "Baby Mine" then this is the craft for you!
First, you need to whip up a batch of salt dough using our Salt Dough Ornament Recipe. It's super easy and you probably have the ingredients on hand already. Once you've got your dough, make your handprints (and footprints too!) according to the instructions.
Once your handprint has cooler (I usually leave them overnight), you'll be ready to paint. I use acrylic paint and have had a set of Apple Barrel paints for a few years now. You use very little paint so these will last you a while for this project. You can pick them up at your local big box or craft store, or on Amazon if you're a shop from home sort of gal like me. You'll need black, white yellow, and red. You can mix white + black to make grey and red + white to make pink. You'll also need a variety of small brushes. An inexpensive set, like these, works great.
I mention in the salt dough ornament recipe post that I bake my ornaments on silicone baking sheets, but I also paint on them! They're easy to clean and prevent paint from getting on my kitchen table while crafting.
Start with painting the entire surface white. That will give it a clean background since the dough color is more oatmeal colored. Then, paint the handprint grey. After your grey handprint has dried, start outlining in black to show detail. I freehanded this design so just try to follow my lead, or you can create your own. That's the great thing about DIY - it's unique and your own. Remember, this doesn't have to be perfect; it's just an ornament.
Next, create the ears, eyes, mouth, and trunk. The trunk is a little tricky since you're creating it from a short thumb. I made this one so it appears that it's folded on top of itself. Finish off with the hat and collar.
Once it's dry, go ahead and string a ribbon through it and you're good to go. Be sure to write your child's name on the back and the year so you can memorialize their Dumbo Christmas ornament.
