    Early Lingo Language DVDs Review

Our #FALLingForBaby event continues today with an awesome giveaway from Early Lingo!
Early Lingo was created by Caryn Antonini, a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Languages and Linguistics. At Georgetown, Caryn developed an understanding of how a child acquires their language skills and the relationship to their cognitive developement. After having a little one of her own, she decided to develop a playful series to teach children a foreign language. Thus, Early Lingo was born. It's an interactive program that allows young children to become familiar with a foreign language through immersive and repetitive learning techniques.
I so badly want to teach my little guy a second language. I think learning a second language would be a tremendous gift and a skill that would benefit him throughout his life. The problem is, I don't speak a second language. I've thought about trying to learn, but I know it's harder as an adult. I've read that the optimal time to learn a second language is before age six, so I'd really love to give my little man the opportunity. When I was offered a six DVD box set from Early Lingo, to say I was excited would be an understatement! I jumped at the chance!
I was sent a 6 DVD Box Set in Spanish for review:
Here is a little bit of information about the technique used from Early Lingo's website:

    • Early Lingo is a playful approach to learning.
    • The interactive program allows young children to become familiar with a foreign language through immersive and repetitive learning techniques.
    • The use of playful animation and live-action video create a stimulating visual context.
    • The Early Lingo Series is the first of its kind, offering a solid foundation in learning foreign languages. With frequent exposure any child will be able to speak with no accent and familiarity.
    • Early Lingo uses the Total Immersion Method, a method that immerses the child immediately into the target language with no use of translation.
    • Early Lingo uses native speakers who articulate, speak slowly and use comprehensible words and phrases that are easy for the child to understand.
    • Children can learn a foreign language in their own home at any given time, an easy and convenient learning experience for all.
    images adapted from Early Lingo

Early Lingo features an animated monkey, JoJo and his bird friend Lulu, speaking a foreign language as they navigate every day situations. Since Early Lingo utilizes the Total Immersion Method, as soon as the DVD begins, your child is immediately immersed into the target language with no use of translation. This has been proven to be the most effective and natural method of learning a new language.

The animated scenes with JoJo and Lulu are fun and engaging, but there is also live action footage mixed in to show your child real-world situations. For instance, in the first DVD JoJo encounters animated balloons, then real children are shown with actual balloons. I really love how the DVD switches between colorful animation and real life footage. It breaks up the lesson and keeps my little one's attention.

Another thing I love about Early Lingo is that the entire DVD features only authentic native speakers of the language that you choose; in my case Spanish. Even the subtitles are written in Spanish to further reinforce the spoken word. The voices are clear and easy to understand and you can definitely tell which item or action they are referring to when they are speaking. Each concept is specific and repeated in multiple scenes to avoid any confusion. That's another learning tool used by Early Lingo - repetition. Repetition is vital in a child's learning proces,s and by featuring the same item over and over in different situations, it helps to drive the information home.

The Early Lingo Series is organized into 12 familiar everyday activities (for a total of 12 DVDs). Each DVD is a separate mini-adventure featuring scenarios like going to the park, market, or school. We've watched the first six DVDs countless times now. My little guy is only 15 months old and I'm really impressed at how long these DVDs will hold his attention. Since he isn't very verbal yet, I'm not sure how much Spanish he has actually learned, but I know that I have learned a lot! I really enjoy watching these DVDs with him - not only am I learning, I'm also able to reinforce what he's learning.

Overall, I'd highly recommend the Early Lingo series to anyone wanting to help their child become familiar with a second (or third or fourth!) language. I think this series would also make an amazing gift for little friends and family members!

I am so torn on the languages 🙂 I took 5 years of Italian, but Spanish would ultimatley be most useful. We do not have a 2nd language spoken at home... I think I'd go with Italian, to be fun and I can brush up too 🙂

It's a toss up between Spanish and German in our house. I am part German but don't know the language very well so it's something we could do together. But my daughter's father's family is Hispanic and I think teaching her the language would be nice in the same way.

When I looked around on the Early Lingo website I learned that Bilingual children or multilingual children are more likely to grow up and score higher on the S-A-T. I like the total immersion method and I also like that I can learn along too and help my child learn. My husband and I both took spanish for four years in high school and are shocked by how little we know now. We would like our
