Britax has been an industry leader in mobile safety for over 70 years. Their commitment to child safety is unwavering as evidenced by their continued innovation of products that undergo rigorous testing to ensure that your child is safe and secure. Britax has a full line of infant car seats, convertible car seats, combination harness-to-booster seats, and belt-positioning booster seats so you can find the right seat for your child.
When I was in the market for a new convertible car seat for my son, I immediately looked to Britax. You may remember that I had the opportunity to review the Britax B-READY stroller and Britax is certainly a brand that I trust. Not only are their car seats known for their amazing safety features, they are also stylish, high-quality, and made with easy to clean fabrics. It sounded like music to my ears! I was sent a Britax Boulevard 70-G3 in Zebra at no cost to facilitate this review:
The Britax Boulevard 70-G3 is a convertible car seat designed for children 5-70 pounds. The Boulevard was designed to accommodate children rear-facing until 40 pounds and/or 49 inches. It has forward facing capabilities for children 1 year and 20-70 pounds and up to 49 inches. Since it's Child Passenger Safety Week, this is a good time to mention that studies have shown that your child is 5 times safer (that's 500% safer!) when riding rear-facing, and the Britax Boulevard 70-G3 definitely allows for extended rear-facing. The Boulevard 70-G3 comes with an infant body pillow (you can see this in the photo above) to provide a better fit for infants using this seat. You can even fold the sides of the pillow in for additional support for bitty babies. Once the child can sit comfortably in the seat without additional support, feel free to remove it.
Let's get right to the important safety features of this great car seat. The Boulevard 70-G3 has a five point harness which is also tangle-free thanks to their HUGS Chest Pads with Safe-Cell Technology. Wondering what HUGS Chest Pads and Safe-Cell Technology is? The HUGS (Harness Ultra-Guard System) Chest Pads are affixed to the seat shell and assist in reducing the forward movement of your child by adding friction to the harness against your child's chest (you can see in the photo below that the HUGS Chest Pads are tethered to prevent movement). Additionally, the SafeCells (which are engineered structures) will compress to further manage energy, reducing the risk of head injury in the event of a collision. This is an amazing safety feature! The HUGS Chest Pads also help to keep the chest clip more correctly positioned. With a lot of car seats, the chest clip has a tendency to slide to the bottom, near the buckle. The HUGS Chest Pads help prevent this sliding, but just in case there is a great graphic on the clip itself that illustrates correct positioning, at the level of the child's armpits.
The Boulevard 70-G3 also features True Side Impact Protection, meaning it has deep side walls with energy-absorbing EPP foam. The head restraint offers a double layer of EPP foam. This was designed to distribute crash forces, shield against vehicle intrusion, and contain the head, neck, and body “in true” or aligned position. You can see how thick the head restraint is in the photos below. I've used and reviewed other car seats that didn't have a head restraint and I have to say, I love this layer of protection.
A unique feature of the Boulevard 70-G3 is the base. I touched on Britax's SafeCell Technology earlier and the base also has this awesome feature. The design of the base allows the SafeCells to compress in the case of a crash, which will significantly lower the center of gravity and counteract the forward rotation of the child seat which normally propels the child toward the front seat. In the photo below, you can see just a peek of the SafeCells - this honeycomb structure would compress in the event of a collision to lower the seat's center of gravity. The Boulevard 70-G3 is also outfitted with integrated steel bars to strengthen the connection to the vehicle and reduce forward flexing of the car seat in case of a crash. This is really safety you can SEE! The contoured base also features anti-slip grips that protect the vehicle seat, while offering optimum vehicle fit.
Let's flip this seat around so you can see it from the backside and see all of the "behind the scenes" safety features.
The Britax Boulevard 70-G3 has an Energy-Absorbing Versa-Tether that is attached to two points of the upper part of the child seat. There is also a hook on this strap (or webbing) that attaches to an anchor in your vehicle (if one is available in your make/model). The versa-tether system allows you to tether your child seat in either the rear-facing or forward-facing modes. Unlike other car seat tethers, the Britax Versa-Tether has two attachment points. This helps to distribute crash forces over a larger area of the seat shell. This tether system also helps minimize the movement of your child during the crash, and helps to slow down your child’s body during a crash.
Located on the back of the HUGS Chest Pads/Harness adjuster is HUGS Energy-Absorbing Stitching (see the bottom right photo below). This is a very unique feature that can alert you to whether or not the child seat has been involved in a moderate or severe crash. If one or both of the energy-absorbing stitches (colored red on the black fabric below) are ripped, the seat is no longer acceptable for use and will need to be replaced.
We've talked a lot about safety, let's switch gears and talk about your little one's comfort and the functionality of the Britax Boulevard 70-G3.
I've already mentioned that the HUGS Chest Pads ensure a tangle free situation for the harness, BUT it's also a NO RETHREAD system! I love, love, love, LOVE no rethread harnesses. To adjust the harness height, you simply squeeze the harness height adjuster located at the top of the head restraint and pull up (or push down) to the appropriate level. Make sure it locks into position and that's it! No complicated harness yokes to deal with or slipping the straps through multiple layers - just squeeze the adjustor and pull up or push down. There are several height options to choose from, just a few are demonstrated in the photo below.
The Boulevard also features 3 positions for comfort and safety. To adjust, you just pull the recline handle on the front of the seat then rotate the seat shell to the desired level. Make sure it's locked into position and you're good to go!
As I mentioned earlier, there is an infant support pillow for little babies, and high density foam to make your little one's ride even more comfortable and enjoyable. The harness straps include comfort pads to prevent the straps from digging into your child's tender neck. The seat cover is constructed out of easy to clean fabric that is easily removable for cleaning. You don't even need to disassemble the seat, the cover slips on and off around the harness and buckle. Speaking of the buckle, the Boulevard features an EZ-Buckle System which retains the harness buckle in a forward position and prevents the child from sitting on the buckle when boarding. No more digging underneath your squirmy child! This is an awesome feature!
Finally, let's talk about installation! Thanks to the built in lock-offs and premium lower LATCH connectors, whether you're using your vehicle's safety belt or the LATCH system installation in EASY!
If you're using your LATCH system, just unhook the lower LATCH connectors from their neat storage unit on the back of the seat and find your lower anchors. There will be a very audible "click" so you'll know your LATCH connectors are properly connected.
We installed this car seat in my husband's sedan using the LATCH system and it was SO easy! Since my little guy is only 14 months old and 25 pounds we opted to install the seat rear-facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that toddlers remain rear-facing until age 2 or until they reach the highest weight limit of height allowed by their car seat's manufacturer. Since the Britax Boulevard 70-G3 allows children to be rear facing until they are 40 pounds, this decision was a no-brainer for us; we intend on leaving our little guy rear-facing for as long as possible. While we would have preferred using the center of the backseat (as this is furthest away from a side impact), this particular sedan does not allow for that. Although I didn't get the best photo of the car seat installed, you can see that my little guy has plenty of leg room and is nice and comfortable in the Britax Boulevard 70-G3. I know a lot of parents are concerned their child will be cramped if they keep them rear-facing past one year, but my little guy is perfectly comfortable and is in the 98th percentile for height.
Overall, I'm impressed and thrilled with the Britax Boulevard 70-G3 convertible car seat! This seat combines innovative technology and amazing safety features with easy to clean, stylish fabrics, resulting in one fantastic car seat! I would highly recommend the Boulverad 70-G3 to anyone in the market for a convertible car seat. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Britax.

I like that the seats clicks in to a recline position. This is the problem we are having with our current car seat. We get it reclined just right (and in the correct safe angle) and then because we have angled seats the seat slides into the groves causing my son to be more up right and the sit to slip and slide on the leather seats. I think the 'no rethread harness' is absolutely GENIUS! Finally, an easier process to get the proper harness fit for my child.
