Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is a global cultural phenomenon that has thrilled and inspired generations of moviegoers around the globe. The movie has dominated the box office and has grossed over $696 million domestically and $1.34 billion globally since its release. Those are HUGE numbers and it can only mean one thing, you've GOT to see and own this movie.

Black Panther follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

An Interview with Executive Producer Nate Moore

I got to sit down with Executive Producer Nate Moore during my time in Los Angeles for the Avengers: Infinity War premiere, and got to see some of the bonus footage before anyone else. I LOVE seeing behind-the-scenes shots and hearing stories and anecdotes about how the films are made. I think it's so fascinating to hear the first-hand experiences of the actors and filmmakers.

We previewed 3 bonus features, including "The Crowning of a New King," which is a behind-the-scenes compilation of how they put Wakanda together,  "Warriors Within," which tells us more about Wakanda’s women " Hidden Kingdom Revealed," which shows how they crafted the different tribes that make up Wakanda.

You can get a sneak peek at The Warriors Within here:

I'd think the hardest part of putting together the bonus features would be choosing which footage to include. I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of hours of footage and clips to choose from. We asked Nate Moore how they pick the features to include on the discs and digital and he said, "We have a brainstorming session where people get to pitch out ideas of what they think is interesting and also what footage we have that we can show. So, the typical ones like deleted scenes and gag reels, we know we’re going to do so we are collecting that footage all through production and postproduction. And then at the end of the day, once we kind of get a sense of what people are responding to out in the world, we can kind of craft our features based on that. This movie just happened to have a lot of really in-depth stuff because the building of Wakanda was so complicated. Unlike other films like Captain America, which I loved and worked on, but that world is a bit more familiar to audiences. So, there’s less to tell. We had a lot of stories to tell from this one."

As for the deleted scenes, we also asked why some of the scenes are cut from the final version of the film. Moore said, "Pace. Our director's cuts are always really long and it’s no secret. With a script, some things feel very necessary storytelling wise. When you watch the movie... [some things] actually work being inferred. For instance, there’s a great scene in the deleted scenes between Okoye and W’Kabi, after Killmonger has taken the throne and it’s their differing points of view as to which side to take. It’s a fantastic scene. Danai and Daniel Kaluuya do a fantastic job. And we kept it in every cut of the movie through testing because we thought it was so important for people to understand the relationship. And because it seemed so good frankly. And when we pulled it, we found that audiences understood just as well but the pace issue we had for that part of the movie went away. So, people got really frustrated in waiting for T’Challa to come back. So, the shorter we made that area, the better it played."

One thing I always like to think about, and I mentioned this in my Avengers: Infinity War review, is can you watch this movie as a stand-alone film, not knowing much about the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Nate Moore confirmed that the answer was yes. He added, "When we were building this story, one thing that Kevin [Feige] actually said very early on was, 'I think there’s enough in this property that we don’t have to have a lot of different intersections because we think it stands alone.' So, that’s also why you don’t see Tony Stark or Steve Rogers, which I think we could have made a case for some of those characters to sort of naturally intersect. But there was so much storytelling and so much detail that we actually were able to keep a lot of that stuff out. And I think it helps the movie just feel like it’s own experience.
