Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. Die-hard fans and recreational watchers alike were waiting (and waiting) for any scrap of news they could get about this promised-to-be-epic Marvel flick. I got to attend the Avengers: Infinity War premiere and was one of the first people in the world to see the movie in its entirety. If you want to know if it lives up to the hype, you've come to the right place.
In an effort to be completely transparent, let me start out by saying that before the invitation arrived to attend this premiere, I hadn't seen all of the Marvel films (I know, I know, don't hurt me!). I'd seen a few but wasn't completely up to speed when it came to the full Marvel Cinematic Universe. I quickly binge watched every Marvel film and, as cheesy as it sounds, realized I have REALLY been missing out.
So, why am I telling you this? I want to share a hopefully spoiler-free Avengers: Infinity War review from the perspective of a newer Marvel fan. I want you to know that you don't have to be fluent in Marvel lingo to enjoy and appreciate this film. I have a little boy who is obsessed with the idea of Captain America and Iron Man, and I know he's going to want to watch this film at some point. Like me, you can watch Avengers: Infinity War with your kids or husband and totally enjoy it.
Ever since I attended the D23 Expo last year and saw a sneak peek of Avengers: Infinity War, I've been keeping an eye on this new Russo brothers film. I've been following the hashtags on Twitter and waiting for trailers and posters to be released. The anticipation for Infinity War was intense and I hoped it would live up to expectations.
The sheer star power of this movie is INSANE. I'm talking Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin, Don Cheadle, Sebastian Stan, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Idris Elba, Peter Dinklage, Benedict Wong, Benicio del Toro... I can only imagine what it must have been like to film this movie!
Besides the star talent involved in making Infinity War, the team behind the cameras is just as impressive. Anthony and Joe Russo were tapped as co-directors. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were chosen to write the screenplays, as they'd done for the other Captain America movies (note: Avengers: Infinity War is part 1 of a 2 part sequel to Avengers: Age of Ultron). Alan Silvestri, who composed the score for The Avengers, returned to compose for Infinity War.
So, do the powerhouses in front of the camera and powerhouses behind the scenes make for an incredible film and does this movie live up to the hype? I'm going to say it absolutely does. Not only is it action-packed with a powerful storyline, I loved to watch the characters interact with one another. If you've seen some previous Marvel films, you know that many of them focus on just one, or a subset of characters at a time (like Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Guardians of the Galaxy (the first one and Vol. 2), the Black Panther, etc). To see the characters come together and get acquainted (or reacquainted) is fascinating and fun. It's a bit reminiscent of Captain America: Civil War but on a much larger and more awesome scale.
The premise of the film is no secret; the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has to come together to defeat Thanos, who is trying his best to collect the Infinity Stones so that he can end the universe. There is no shortage of death and destruction, but there's also a lot of humor and pure adrenaline.
The way they've connected all of the previous films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War is quite impressive. The fact that they can incorporate this many superheroes in one film and intricately weave their storylines together is nothing short of amazing. These aren't just secondary or third-string heroes we're talking about either. Infinity War includes at least 9 superheroes who have already starred in their own full-length film. They found a way to bring them all together and gave them each their own time to shine.
It's really difficult to talk too much without giving much away. Every single scene is important and integral to the plot line. I don't want to spoil it for you at all, but I really think you need to see it. I'm still processing everything and think I need to see it at least a few more times to really absorb it all. I can't wait to see it again.
Could you see Infinity War if you haven't seen other Marvel movies?
As I was watching the movie, I kept trying to answer the question, "Would I enjoy this movie if I hadn't seen any other Marvel movies." I think for a lot of the other Marvel movies that is definitely true. For instance, I saw Thor: Ragnarok before seeing the other 2 Thor films. It was entertaining and I could follow along easily without knowing the backstory.
I think in this case, you might be a little confused about the backstory of the characters since there are so many layers that have been built over the past 10 years. I think. It would still be wildly entertaining, funny, and interesting, but you'd miss a lot of the inside jokes and might be a bit confused on certain plot points. It would definitely be in your best interest to see at least some of the other titles beforehand.
