Earlier this week, I was loading up the kids and the groceries next to a man who you might say looked a little rough around the edges. He saw our new car seat in the back and said, "A RECARO baby seat. Cool!" I thought, how odd, that this stranger would be in the know about car seats, but then I noticed that he had racing stickers on his truck and clearly, he was familiar with the brand from the racing world and approved of their making car seats for kids! All the boxes check for me too when it comes to this Recaro Performance Sport Combination Harness to Booster Sea and RECARO sent me one to review at no cost.
I used to be quite clueless about car seats and boosters when were buying them for our first child. I chose seats that were available at the store and looked comfy, and I didn't look into a lot of other features that are important. Now that we're trying to fit THREE kids in the back seat, size is a huge factor, and I'm looking into other qualifications that should have been priorities all along. I mentioned that size is a priority for us, and primarily the width, in order to fit three seats in the back of our Honda Fit. I measured the Performance SPORT to be 17" wide near the base and 19" wide across at the wings. That is competitive! These measurements make this car seat one of the slimmest on the market and an excellent choice for families trying to squeeze three car seats next to each other in the back. It's slim, but it doesn't feel too narrow for a stocky child, however, and my husky almost-five-year-old says it is "so comfortable". His hips are not squished and he has plenty of room to grow. I'm sure the "cloud comfort memory foam" has a lot to do with the comfort factor!
There are four different settings for the head restraint, offering customized support and safety. These head restraint adjustments can be done pretty easily, actually, and it's one of the best systems I've seen. There is a handle mechanism on the back that you pull away from the seat to re-position the headrest up or down. I love that this adjustment can be made in seconds and there is no re-threading of the shoulder straps. This feature makes the seat a great choice for carpools or other occasions when multiple children might be using the same seat and you need to make adjustments quickly.
Upon first glance, I noticed the durability of the harness straps and the white line that immediately alerts you of any possible twisting, which in my opinion, is incredibly unlikely to occur because of these HERO pads at the shoulders. These certainly look racing-car inspired, and they add comfort while ensuring that the chest clip doesn't ride up too high, which is a common mistake a parent can make when buckling in their children. Strap-twisting is a huge pain, so I'm pleased as can be to not have to deal with it on this seat. True to its word, we haven't noticed any twisting at all in the last few weeks we've been using this - hallelujah!
The strap length adjustments are just as easy to make. The straps can be tightened or loosened by accessing the adjuster flap in the front. When you're ready to take the straps off altogether and convert this to a booster, there is handy hook indentation for storage on the back.
And speaking of converting between modes, let's look at that booster mode. Loosen the harness straps, unbuckle the harness, slide the buckle pad off and remove, slide the straps off of the bracket you see above on the right, snap the yoke back into its storage position, and pull the straps out of the HERO harness system. You then further guide the straps out by pulling the metal anchors through the slots. I think its an easy-to-follow and un-mysterious sequence of events to follow that you can figure out without a manual once you've done it yourself. Converting to booster mode and then back to harness mode didn't take me more than 10 minutes my first time.
Note that this is not a car seat for infants. This seat is ONLY to be used if your child is at least a year old, weighs over 20 pounds, and is at least 27 inches tall, and that is specifically for the harness mode. The harness is intended to fit up to the average 9.5-year-old child and up to 65 pounds, but in booster mode, this car seat has a remarkable high weight limit of 120 pounds! That is the weight of some high schoolers!
And now for my favorite features! First of all, we've owned car seats in the past that are so back-heavy that they don't stay upright when you take them out of the car. They're obnoxious to travel with and difficult to take apart when you need to clean the seat. This Performance SPORT, however, will not teeter on the ground and this cushion insert will make cleaning up messes even easier. Side storage pockets are always a hit with my kids so they can keep their sippy cups close, and I'm glad to see these are made of mesh, so they won't collect crumbs or moisture.
My top favorite feature is something I noticed straight out of the box and knew I would love: a wide and comfortable handle on the top! If I'm going to be loading/unloading something this heavy on a regular basis, with it needing to be cleaned frequently (my kids can get quite motion sick), I can't deal with something horribly awkward to work with! This handle might seem like a small thing, but I'm so glad RECARO decided to add it.
I was definitely skeptical that we could fit three hefty car seats in the back, but indeed they all fit! We have a Diono Radian on the end, the Maxi Cosi Mico AP in the middle, and our RECARO Performance SPORT on the other end. It can be done, folks! As we were installing this, seat my husband noted that these RECARO latches are much easier to install than other car seat brands.
I also really love how substantially supportive these side wings are. I think this makes the seat ideal for nappers and car-sleepers, as well as adding a huge measure of side impact protection. Since RECARO has four decades of racing seat safety experience, its easy to see how their child car seats are designed to protect the head, face, neck, torso, and pelvis.
I'm definitely impressed, and I feel completely confident that my son is very protected and very safe in this seat. I'm pleased that he'll be able to use it for as long as he needs, since the weight and size limits are so high. The appearance of this seat is so clean and slick that my boy feels like its a sweet ride to sit inside! He begs to go driving somewhere so that he can sit in his new car seat! Thanks, RECARO!

Love love love twist resistant straps omgosh!! I can't even tell you how many arguments has ensued from hubby and I deciding if the straps and/or buckles were right due to twisting lol!!! My little guy is so petite, he's 5 1/2 and only 36 pounds. I'm in no hurry to move him into a booster seat, but he starts kindergarten soon and is already complaining about how he wants to move out of his carseat and sit in a booster like his big brother. The styling of this carseat makes it look like a big kids' seat and I think he'd happily wear the harness in this seat and still feel excited that he moved "up" to a big kid seat.

It's really important for us to have narrow seats as well, and I drive a van. It's crazy how much space some seats take up. I'm glad car seat manufacturers are starting to take note of that. This seat looks awesome, but I will say that I hope nobody puts their 20lb 1 year old in it. It's still recommended to be rear facing until at least 2 years. I know you only mentioned that because that's the instructions on this seat, but some people legitimately don't know of the safety benefits to keeping their child rear facing.

We have one of these seats and are pretty happy with it. However, I don't really believe the "average" 9.5 year old is only 49" and 65 lbs. My 6.5 year old girl who is a bit on the taller side but not crazy tall is already almost at the 49". We are going to have switch her to booster mode on this seat sooner than we had hoped.

I like that it can grow with your child, so you don't have to buy several for different stages, that you don't have to rethread the belts as they grow due to the back mechanism, and that it isn't huge or take up lots of space like other car seats do.

I have never tried a Recaro seat before and would love to try one out! I have in the very distant past raced cars with Recaro seats and always thought of them as the safest seat out there. I like that it can fit a wide range of ages and weight and will be a long lasting seat!

I think the 4 different head restraint adjustment feature is awesome, as this seat really grows along with the child. Plus, it actually looks comfortable for little ones, which is definitely important! I like the side pockets as well for bottles or sippy cups, anything that keeps them upright and off the seat or the floor is definitely needed!

It's the littlest things that make a huge difference! I LOVE the white line down the side of the strap! The straps on our current car seats are always getting twisted and half the time I don't realize it until my son is all buckled in.

Recaro is a great brand. I haven't had one yet but have heard great things from friends. This review just adds to what I already had heard people love. I love the twist resistant straps and the cup holder - those are added bonuses to what looks like a safe and great booster!

I love the fact that it's not as wide as some since our suv is on the smaller side. The handle on the top looks extremely convenient as well. My daughters grandma would use it as well and that would make it easier for her to carry!

I love everything about this seat, and it's definitely a top contender for our new arrival in November. I love the ease of adjusting the shoulder straps as well as the twist-resist straps. The handle for easy carry is a big deal for us since we don't own vehicles and have to uninstall and reinstall our seats constantly.

Would love to win this for my 7 year old stepson. If he still fits in the harness, great, as he still falls asleep almost every car ride. If not, still makes a great booster with enough side impact cushion to keep his head in place!
