With two kids under five, it's important for us to get out of the house at least once a week to maintain our sanity! In the summer that's easier, but winter in Minnesota makes it tough because it's just SO COLD. This winter we made it a priority to get out of the house with some planned activities, and it's been a lot of fun. I've partnered with Obersee to share some fun ways to get out of the house with young kids. Plus, I've got a look at their brand new Madrid Convertible Diaper Bag!
I'm not sure about other parts of the country, but this year in Minnesota, winter is lasting forever. There's nothing we can do about it so we might as well make the best of it, right? Here are some ways we've been getting out of the house this winter!
Winter Activities for Moms and Kids
MOPS Group - Have you heard of Moms of Preschoolers? If not, you should look up a local chapter and join right away! Our group meets twice a month and it's wonderful for all of us. The kids enjoy playing and learning in their classrooms, and I get some necessary "me" time with other moms living the same experiences I am.
Recreational Sports - Our daughter has been participating in a recreational dance and gymnastics class for the past two years. It's once a week and it forces us to get out even when we're feeling lazy. On dance/gym days I get to spend a little extra time with our son while our daughter is in class. Plus, I love watching her learn new things and play with her peers!
Open Gym - A couple of our local gymnastics/dance studios have open gym twice a week for preschoolers. Our kids love burning some energy in winter and playing on the trampoline and balance beams. You can call around and see if your local gym offers something similar!
Story Time - We go to Barnes and Noble for story time every Thursday and Saturday when we're looking for something fun to do! They usually read a story and then do a little art activity with the kids. Our kids always find some new friends to play with while we're there, too!
Since we like to get out of the house for activities during the week, we need to have a great bag for our necessities. Lately I've been loving our Madrid Convertible Diaper Bag from Obersee because it's so versatile and functional!
Madrid Convertible Diaper Bag
The Madrid Convertible Diaper Bag is a messenger-style bag that's perfect for our family. Our two year old is not potty trained so of course we bring a diaper bag wherever we go. However, probably half of the items in our diaper bag are for our four-year-old also.
One of the reasons I love the Madrid Bag so much is the additional items that come with it. Included with the bag is an insulated cooler, which is a huge plus if your kids like to snack like mine. With its own handle, the cooler can be placed into the diaper bag or carried separately.
The bag also comes with a clothing cube which I love. One of my biggest pet peeves is extra clothes getting smashed and wrinkled at the bottom of my bag. With the clothing cube, I can store an extra outfit for both kids, and they're easy to grab or leave in the vehicle. Plus, we like to keep one extra leotard in the cube so we have one on hand for open gym or class.
With both additional bags inside, you'd think space would run out fast. However, there's still plenty of room for diapers, wipes, your wallet, and other miscellaneous items. There are multiple zippered and mesh pockets inside if you're traveling with a younger child. I know I used to carry absolutely everything with me - sunscreen, diaper rash cream, extra pacifiers...you name it, I had it just in case. The Madrid Convertible Diaper Bag has room for all these items and more! I can even fit out laptop in the rear fleece-lined computer pocket which is great for blogging on-the-go.
Another feature that I love about this diaper bag is the designated pocket for the changing mat. With other bags, the changing pad has taken up a portion of the coveted inner pocket. However, Obersee has designated a zippered area for the changing mat on the outside of the bag which makes it easily accessible. Plus, it doesn't take up valuable space inside the bag! The changing mat has pockets for diapers, wipes, and other small items like a tube of diaper rash cream, also.
The small pocket for personal items is a great touch, especially because it's hidden by the cover flap when the top is closed. Obviously my keys go inside the pocket, but I wanted to highlight the hook that makes them so convenient to access when I'm juggling kids and bags!
Speaking of juggling bags, I don't have to with the Madrid Diaper Bag. It can be worn as a backpack! This is quite possibly my favorite feature. With two kids who love to run in opposite directions, I love that I can toss this bag on my back and carry one of them when I need to.
You can also carry the bag on your shoulder, and I appreciate the neoprene shoulder pad because my diaper bag usually gets pretty heavy. The only thing I'd change is that the strap itself is so wide and the buckle to adjust the length is somewhat bulky. However, it's still a quality strap that offers another nice carry-option.
Overall, Obersee's Madrid Convertible Diaper Bag is a great option for families with kids. With its stand-out features like the backpack carry option and multiple add-on organizers, it's great for infant years and can also be used once children get older. I can see myself using this bag long beyond the diaper stages. Plus, it comes in eight different colors so you can customize it for your personality!
