Baby girls are so fun to sew for! If you're looking for an extremely fast and extremely easy project for your little sweetheart, these baby circle skirts are for you! They require just a few supplies, most of which you might already have around your craft room, and I'll show you how to make a circle skirt for babies without having to print, cut, and paste a pattern together.
How to make a circle skirt for Babies
The first step to make these baby circle skirts is to gather up materials. For each skirt, you'll need a square of fabric, some elastic for the waistband, and bias tape for the hem. The fabric can be basically anything you like! The yellow striped fabric I used is a knit, the floral is an upholstery fabric, and the seersucker is a thin cotton.
You can also use any kind of elastic. The black and white elastic I used are .75" wide, and I wouldn't recommend going any thinner. 1" wide elastic would also work great. Notice how the maroon elastic actually came from a pair of suspenders? Use what you've got! .5" wide double fold bias tape is what you want for the hem.
Make a circle skirt
This really is the quickest and easiest way to make a circle skirt: trace a circle on top of it. You can even save yourself the hassle of printing and cutting out a pattern by merely tracing a circle you already have around the house -- like a pizza pan, a hula hoop, a laundry basket, etc. The larger the circle, the longer the skirt will be. My laundry basket has a 17" diameter, and it is going to be sized for a 0-3 month baby.
Trace around the rim of your circular item with a disappearing ink pen or other marker and cut along the line.
You should have some perfectly round circles ready! Again, my laundry basket was 17" in diameter, which made fairly small circles and made skirts sized for 0-3 month babies. Definitely, create larger circles for larger and longer skirts.
From here, in the same fashion of keeping this tutorial extremely quick and easy, I found some more circles around the house to cut out the center: pot lids! Place it exactly in the center by making sure these it is equally distanced from all the sides, then mark and cut.
My pan lid is just under 6" in diameter, and it created a perfect little circle cutout for a 0-3 month size. Use larger pots or lids for larger sizes, and remember that this circumference is going to be gathered onto your elastic, so it doesn't have to be exact.
For the waist elastic, this is where you'll want to be a little more precise. I cut my elastic to 17". Check the chart below for larger waist sizes and my recommendation for elastic length. Notice how you can also use old suspenders for waistband elastic!
Sew the two ends of the elastic together to make the waistband. Pin the elastic to the skirt every few inches, stretching the elastic as you go.
Next, with right sides together, sew the elastic to the skirt at ¼", stretching the elastic as you go so that the fabric is softly gathered.
Now for my favorite part! If you have any sewing experience with skirts, you know that hemming curves is the pits!! It takes a lot of fine attention and still rarely looks professional, in my opinion. Save yourself a TON of hassle and finish the edges with bias tape! It is super cheap to buy (or easy to make) and it goes on effortlessly, making a crisp edge with no fuss. Plus I love the extra element of color on the skirt.
Follow the directions on the package, or simply insert the skirt edge into the middle of the tape and sew along the edge, guiding the curve as you go along. Easy!
These baby circle skirts really do come together quickly and they just look so dang cute! Experiment with larger measurements for little girls, big girls, and even women's size circle skirts.
Enjoy dressing up your little doll in these baby circle skirts!
