Keeping your child safe during flights with the Diono Rainier

This post may contain affiliate links. Click here for more information.

You know, I'm always concerned whether or not your child is in #TheRightSeat, but another important thing we need to discuss is how to safely travel with a little one when a plane flight is part of your plans. Later this month, we’ll be traveling from Florida to Washington State with our 3-year-old via plane. Of course, one of my biggest concerns about the trip is keeping our son safe. That's why I've partnered with Diono to share how we're making plane safety a priority and using a Diono Rainier for our flight.

Since 80% of crashes happen in the first 3 minutes of takeoff and last 8 minutes before landing, I want to be sure my little man is as safe and secure as possible. After doing some research, I realize that holding a child on your lap isn’t enough. Commercial airplanes are traveling at 250 MPH at takeoff and landing, and up to 500 MPH in flight! Combine those speeds with turbulence, and that’s a lot of force behind a small person’s body. An abrupt stop at 250 MPH would make a 20-pound child weigh around 2,500 pounds (See infographic below).

    Car seat air travel

    Diono Rainier Convertible Car Seat

An infant or toddler sitting on their parent's lap is not only at risk of injury to themselves, they're a potential injury risk to other passengers. In the event of an abrupt stop, when that small 25 pound child weighs the equivalent of 2,500 pounds, they're bound to be propelled out of their parent's arms, turning into a projectile of sorts. Isn't that a scary thought! Diono knows that the safe solution for children traveling on an airplane is for them to be securely seated in the proper car seat. Just like riding in a car, children are well protected while riding rear-facing in their car seats on an airplane.

    Diono Rainier

Diono wanted our little guy to be safe on his first plane flight, so they sent me the Diono Rainier Convertible Booster Car Seat to bring with us on our trip. (Tip: Your child restraint system must have printed on it “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft” or the airport will ask you to check the seat with your luggage. See this FAA publication for more information about child safety on airplanes.) Thanks to the Rainier's space saving design, it's able to fit on most standard passenger airliner seats (it can also fit three across the backseat of most standard vehicles).

The thing I like the most about the Ranier, besides it's amazing safety features, is that it can be used from infancy to childhood. It accommodates children for extended rear-facing up to 50 lbs., forward facing from 20 to 90 lbs., and it even converts to a booster for children between 50 and 120 lbs. or up to 57 inches in height. The Rainier also has the highest forward-facing capacity of any car seat in a 5-point harness: from 20-90 lbs (up to 57" in height)! I plan on keeping my children in a 5-point harness for as long as physically possible, so I'm so thankful that the Rainier allows for extended harnessing. This seat definitely has the capacity to grow with your child, and thanks to Diono's 12-year product life, it surely can!

I briefly mentioned the safety features before and I must say, they're impressive. The headrest of the Rainier is aluminum reinforced and has 12 different positions as well as EPA foam for adjustable and comfortable support. It also boasts a full steel frame and aluminum reinforced sides for unmatched safety. The Rainier is also the only brand of car seats with SuperLATCH; with the strongest connectors and Secureweave webbing it provides an easy and secure installation, and that's reassuring since the majority of car seats in America are not installed correctly. Of course, all of these safety features are amazing, but it also means something else - the Rainier is quite heavy! The Rainier weighs in at 28.4 pounds so keep that in mind for your travels.

    Diono Rainier Folded Position

The Rainier folds for easier transport, which is fantastic and makes it ideal for travel. There are a few different ways to carry the Rainier if you don't have the optional carrying straps (a shoulder strap and backpack straps are available for purchase from Diono).

    Diono Rainier Carry

When folded, the Rainier features a red carry strap that you can hold, or you can carry it via the plastic side. If you've ever tried to make it through the airport with your luggage, your children, and their car seat(s), you know the struggle. That's why I was thrilled that Diono also sent me their Car Seat Travel Bag. It makes carrying the Rainier SO much easier.

    Diono Car Seat Travel Bag

The Diono car seat bag fits all of the Diono seats so no matter which model you have, you'll be covered. All you do is fold the seat, put it in the bag, zip it up, and you're ready to go. It's heavy duty with reinforced internal seams, waterproof fabric and durable hardware to support the weight of the car seat.

    carry diono car seat

You can wear it like a backpack or over your shoulder like a duffel bag for easy carrying. Since I'm 5'4'' and on the smaller side, the backpack position felt a little strained for me since they area across the back of the bag is rather wide. I think I'd probably carry the Rainier with the shoulder strap and leave the backpack version for my husband. The travel bag also has compartments for carrying small things like stuffed animals, pacifiers, and similar items for easy access. I think this bag is such a great thing to have if you travel often since it will also keep your seat clean.

Now that we have the Diono Rainier, we're definitely ready for our cross-country travels. It makes me feel better to know that in the event of turbulence or an accident my son will be better protected from injury, and we can enjoy the ease of use and portability of this seat. We love our Diono Radian RXT so I'm very confident the Rainier will be near and dear to us for many years to come.

UPDATE: Our trip went really well! Our son was right at home in his Diono Rainier and didn't really realize he could get out of his seat; just like when we're driving. The fact that he wasn't climbing in our laps and trying to run up and down the aisles was a relief! I will say that the seat is HEAVY. It was a bit of a burden to carry through the airport when we had 15 minute walks in between gates. The carrying bag definitely helped, but on our next trip we'll likely order a Go-Go- Babyz Travelmate. I'd highly recommend checking them out if you're flying soon.

You can get the Diono Rainier convertible car seat on Amazon.com.

Good tips. I always think it's good to have babies restrained in a car seat and not "free" on your lap. It isn't worth the money saved if there is an accident.

From visiting the Diono website, I learned the importance of not securing a child in a car seat with a coat or thick layers on. Those layers can prevent a secure fit of the car seat straps and cause the child to come out of the car seat during an accident. My children are older and I used to always make sure they had a snowsuit or thick coat on before putting them in their car seat.

I have actually never flown with my children before, but this is very good advice! From what I have seen, a lot of people simply hold their babies on their laps when they fly, which doesn't seem very safe to me. I absolutely love that this carseat folds, and that it is narrow enough to fit on an airplane seat.

This is the exact car seat convertible I've been looking at, it has one of the highest weight 120lbs it can hold and one of the tallest height. It has the booster with the back which is safest and the slim design to fit more across! I know its heavy but safety first. I want it to last the longest for my son, the longer he can sit in it the safer he is. I hope I can win this!

I learned that Diono developed side impact protection for all of its car seats by creating a rigorous testing protocol that simulates side impact crashes. The seats were evaluated on how well they contain the head, chest and pelvis acceleration. Testing was repeatedly performed in multiple facilities both in the US and in Europe.

I also learned that if you put "www" in front of a web address that isn't supposed to have one, you don't get the right page! (Your link to their page in the 3rd entry option (for these comments) has this problem!)

I'm so glad you posted this! I'm a [relatively] new mama of a 17 m old. As of yet, we've never taken her on a plane, and it could be awhile before we do, but I had never really thought about child safety while on planes! The main thing I had been told/was aware of is kids under 2 fly free, so I figured that they just sit on your lap. Thanks for enlightening me.

Traveling with my oldest sons carseat is such a pain that I have been looking for a better travel convertible carseat for my youngest. I think being able to fold it and put in a bag to wear like a backpack would help going through and airport with 2 little ones and two big carseats.

I'm not sure if it's still true, but it used to be that children under 2 (or 3?) could fly free if they sat on their mother or father's lap. Most parents opt for this to save money (and are probably thinking nothing will happen to them), but it is not worth the risk if something did. I was not aware (as I'm sure most people aren't) that a 25 lb. child becomes the equivalent of 2500 lbs. if the plane needed to make a sudden stop or had extreme turbulence, making the child a very dangerous projectile, to him/herself and others. On a positive note, I love how this seat folds flat and has convenient carry straps. There's also the option to purchase a travel bag to carry it in, which I think is optimal not just for carrying the seat, but for keeping it clean and protected from damage!

Car seats are heavy, no matter how you slice them, but I love how this one is less cumbersome. I'm sure every mom who travels can understand walking through an airport with a baby, toddler, stroller, car seat and then (add to all of that) luggage and a diaper bag. I have a Diono Pacifica and love it - we have travelled with it on a plane before and my son did well.. that being said -
      1) even in this bag, the seat is still suuuuuper heavy to carry around the airport
      2) I would find it hard to believe that the seat will fit on a plane seat in the rear-facing position. there is a huge angle to the seat when it faces the back. Plus, some info I read on an airline travel blog said the airline will make you forward-face... not sure if this is accurate for all airlines, or just some.
all-in-all, love the seat and would love to win a Rainier to have a second one for another kiddo in the future.

we love our diono/radian carseats. They have the best safety ratings, and unlike many other highly rated seats, they actually fit three across in the back of a car. And the backs are so tall that even my super tall kids can fit in them. My five year old, a head taller than most other kids her age, still buckles easily into it, although this will be her last year. This has been important to us, because our kids were too tall for most carseats before they were at a safe weight/maturity level for a booster.

We have a Diono Rainier in the Black Houndstooth pattern, and we love it! We took it on a trip just last month. Folding it was super simple, and we attached a carrying strap to the back and carried it like a shoulder bag. It's a little on the heavy side, but with all of the safety features, it's hard to complain. We did not use it on the flight, just as our seat for use after we landed, but traveling with car seats had never been that easy until this seat!
(We are hoping to win this for my sister-in-law who is due later this year. She used ours while visiting and loved it, but it is a little more than they can afford at this time. ? Ours was our spare seat until we found that we are expecting a little one of our own early next year. ?)

(The link for the entry to comment what you learned from the Diono website is bringing up an error for me. ?)

I learned that there are so many different styles of seats offered by Diono. I had heard of the Radian, Rainier and Pacifica, but did not know of the Olympia, R100, R120, or the various boosters available. ? Also, I noticed that the White Houndstooth pattern is no longer listed on their site, which I assume means that the limited edition print is no longer available. ?

Important information! I think airline policy should change so that each person needs a seat, including children under two, (although I think they should give discounts to families). I flew once with a "lap baby" when my 7-year-old was 1. I'm so grateful that nothing happened. Then, I learned to do better and on our next flight, I was pulling the car seat through the airport. Being able to fold it up would have been much better!

I have learned so much recently, I just wish they would require flight attendants and pilots to be educated on the FAA regulations of traveling with a seat onboard!! So many of them believe the seat cannot be RF when in fact it can, and should be.

Wow. Such great information on this fabulous car seat. What's not to like? It has everything a parent would want for their child. Never put into thought about the takeoff and landing, and how it's imperative to keep them safe in a car/airplane seat. The fact that it is FAA certified for both car and aircraft is a plus. The ease of installing and that it's secure is something I would look for in a seat, aside from it's safety features, and more. It's a plus for me.
