We have a long-standing tradition of cooking up "Chocolate Waffles" for special occasions. They are so rich and so good, and making them reminds me some of my favorite memories growing up. Back home, my siblings are making them after Prom for all their friends and their dates, and my brother even requested these chocolate waffles to serve his guests at his wedding reception. They are a favorite for sure, and the last time we tried to make them when my brother came to visit, we found our waffle iron was broken! Tragedy! I love how this treat maker lets the kids be involved! The Holstein Housewares brand was actually created to address the need for family-friendly fun when it comes to small and functional kitchen appliances. This waffle maker can be used with or without popsicle sticks, and laying them down is just the job for a small child supervised.

I love not having to pre-heat the oven and how fast we get results! Typical waffles bake in about 7 minutes, but with this chocolate waffles recipe, I found just under 4 minutes to be the magic number.

And those 4 minutes are excruciatingly long for toddlers! We experimented to get just the right amount of batter in the hearts and tried a few times to get it right, but they sure turn out cute!

And now to decorate! I melted down candy wafers in styrofoam bowls cut into shallow dishes.

These made it easy to dip the waffles, plus they make clean-up a breeze because you can just throw away the discs when you're done.

If you can't get the chocolate into all the crevices, just use an extra popsicle stick to smear more chocolate on top and smooth it over.

Add sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft! What a fun family-friendly activity this turned out to be.

The boys loved decorating these!! A treat on a stick is always more fun than not on a stick, and it gave them something to hold on to while they chomped away.

I really loved sharing this chocolate waffles recipe with my kids! Decorating and eating them together was such a fun (and still totally simple) activity for our rainy Spring day, especially since they look so cheerful!
