If there is one thing my kids love, it's bubbles! Summer if in full swing and we're all about spending time together and doing fun activities as a family. I've partnered with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to tell you all about my daughter's newest obsession, the new Teletubbies: Bubbles DVD, and show you some bubble activities for kids and a fun way to celebrate International Bath Day.
My daughter just turned two and I just introduced her to the Teletubbies. To say she's obsessed would be a tad of an understatement. Did you know that the Teletubbies have been around for 20 years?! They're celebrating "20 Years of Big Hugs" in 2017 and I'm so happy that my daughter has fully embraced them. Besides just being fun to watch, Teletubbies has several developmental benefits to help children cultivate their physical, emotional and cognitive skills in a warm, loving and playful environment. One of my favorite things about the Teletubbies is how affectionate they are. They teach kids to get along with others and my daughter loves giving us Big Hugs after watching each episode.
We just received the newest title, Teletubbies: Bubbles, and my daughter was completely fascinated. This DVD contains six new Teletubbies episodes, including "Bubbles," where the Tubby Custard Machine makes tons of Tubby Custard bubbles. Naturally, the playful Teletubbies have a ball while they chase and pop the bubbles. They even have a bit of a dance party during the Tubby Phone Dance. There's also an episode with an adorable sing-along to "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes." We've been practicing that with our little lady so and she was so excited to see the song come to life with the Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.
At 75 minutes long, the DVD is entertaining and my daughter even requested it for a long car ride. I saw her slip it into her mini backpack right before we left for a little road trip to Grandma's house. That's a surefire sign it's a hit for us.
Bubble activities for kids
Did you know that June 14th is International Bath Day? Bath time is such a wonderful time for kids to discover and learn, and adding bubbles just multiplies the sensory play. To keep the bubble fun going after our Teletubbies: Bubbles viewing party, I decided to celebrate National Bath Day with a BIG outdoor bubble bath! I bought an awesome inflatable pool for my kids and knew this would perfect for our bubble activity. Rather than use a store-bought bubble bath, I decided to make my own. I wanted to create a lot of non-toxic bubbles for my kids to play in and this homemade bubble bath recipe did the trick.
Homemade Bubble Bath Recipe
Bath bath recipe ingredients:
- 2 cups of Castile Soap (I used a lavender scented formulation and it was delightful)
- 2 tablespoons Vegetable Glycerin
Instructions:
Mix the castile soap and vegetable glycerin together, then pour the desired amount into bathtub (or kiddie pool in this case).
The good thing about this recipe is that it doesn't have to be exact. Just have fun with it! The velocity of the hose really helps to create a nice mountain of bubbles. My kids were amazed!
I didn't even need to use all of the bubble solution I made because this created such a large amount of fluffy bubbles. Plus, we were able to "re-charge" the bubbles with just a quick spray of the hose from time to time.
Pretty sure I'm winning the "Mom of the Year" award for this day!
After a while the bubbles did start to flatten and we were left with a great smelling milky-white water bath. My kids played outside for about an hour and a half and would have stayed longer if I'd have let them.
After our heavenly scented outdoor bubble bath, we kept the bubble fun going with GIANT bubbles! Since my kids are obsessed with bubbles, I felt pretty confident that I was about to blow their minds when I unboxed a giant bubble wand in front of them. I'm happy to report that I was right!
To make your own giant bubbles you'll just need a giant bubble wand (we have one like this) and a few minutes to to whip up a batch of the best homemade bubble solution.
The best homemade bubble solution:
Here is the recipe I used to make this homemade bubble solution to use with our giant bubble wand:
- 1.5 tbsp guar gum (I purchased this from Amazon)
- 3 tbsp Isopropyl alcohol (could be as little as 2 tbsp or as much as 4 tbsp, I needed 3)
- 2 tbsp Baking powder
- 18 oz. of Dawn Platinum
- 3 gallons of hot tap water - give or take, I didn't measure the water, just filled a 5 gallon bucket about ⅔ full)
Instructions:
- Add 3 gallons of HOT tap water into a 5 gallon bucket. While the water is filling, add in the 2 tbsp of baking powder and still until dissolved.
- In a separate bowl, add guar gum and slowly add rubbing alcohol 1 tbsp at a time. Mix until it forms a lump-free slurry (use a fork like you're beating an egg).
- Swirl the water and baking powder mixture until it creates a vortex, then pour the guar/alcohol slurry and continue stirring until it thickens a bit (about 1-2 minutes)
- Gently mix in the bottles of Dawn (avoid foaming) then let the mixture rest for about 15 minutes.
- Grab your giant bubble want and start making HUGE bubbles!
Check out my bubble making skills in action:
Pretty amazing, huh?! My kids were so excited about these bubbles and my son made me promise that we'd bring some of this homemade bubble solution to his school since their bubbles did not get anywhere near this big.

Kids LOVE teletubbies! It's colorful and fun! It also teaches them so they aren't just "watching tv". it promotes movement- kids will get up to watch it, move with them, dance! their laugh makes kids laugh. Teletubbies was around yearsss ago when I did daycare and I'm glad it's coming back around because I now have a 1 year old grandson I would love to share these!
