If you've ever thought about the quality and cleanliness of your water, this post is for you! We have city water, but I recently learned that doesn't necessarily mean our water is healthy for drinking. After doing some research, we decided it would be in our best interest to use a water filter. I've partnered with Berkey to share an affordable water purification option for the home!
Berkey Water Filter
We recently got notification from our city that we could read about the quality of our tap water on the EWG's database. While our city is in compliance with federal drinking water standards, there are still six contaminants detected above health guidelines. (You can check out your water quality and potential contaminants here.) As a parent with two young kids, it's concerning to me that we have ANY contaminants in our water. I started researching water filter systems and decided that a counter-top filter system would be the best option for us.
Berkey Water Filter Systems is the world leader in portable water purification. I’d heard so many good things about Berkey Filters from other families, so I was thrilled when Berkey agreed to partner with me! I received the Royal Berkey System which has a 3.25 gallon capacity. Setting the water filter up was very simple and done in a matter of minutes.
After attaching the handle to the lid and the spigot into the bottom chamber, it was time to prime the filters. The filters need to be primed because after production, air needs to be forced through the micro-pores. This allows the filters to work efficiently. Priming the elements is as simple as running water through the included priming button into the filters until water starts to come out.
Once the elements are primed and installed in the Berkey Filter, it’s time to fill it up! The Royal Berkey comes with two elements but can hold up to four depending on how quickly you want to filter water. As a family of four, we find the two elements to be sufficient. We can filter up to four gallons per hour which is more than enough!
Berkey Black Purifier Elements
Berkey’s Black Purifier Elements are revolutionary in the water filter world. Check out this statement about their elements, from the Berkey website: “We tested the filters with more than 10,000 times the concentration of harmful pathogens per liter of water than is required by industry-standard test protocols. Incredibly, Berkey water filter elements removed 100% of the pathogens. After using the Black Berkey filters, absolutely no pathogens were found in the effluent or were able to be detected.” That's incredible!
Berkey Black Purifier Elements have been proven to remove cysts, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and harmful chemicals from water...and they do that without removing the beneficial minerals found naturally in water! There’s no need to replace minerals while using a Berkey Water Filter.
The two elements we have will last up to 6,000 gallons before they start to lose efficacy and filtering speed. When calculated out, it costs us less than two cents/gallon for clean drinking water. Having the security of clean water is invaluable! I love that I can feel safer about the water we’re ingesting, especially with two little ones who drink a LOT of water.
At 23” tall, it is a bit large for our counter. I’m planning to find a cart that we can place the Royal Berkey on. Currently we just shift it back and forth in front of our least-used cupboards which actually works just fine. Our kids have no problem grabbing themselves a drink of water because the spigot is very kid-friendly!
Overall we love our Berkey Water Filter. We've been recommending it to friends looking for a way to provide safer water for their families. Berkey Filters are available in a variety of sizes, from the Travel Filter (1.5 gallon capacity) to the Crown Berkey (6 gallon capacity). No matter your family size, there’s a Berkey to fit your needs!
You can purchase Berkey Water Filters from Berkey's website or from Amazon. Keep an eye out for the Scratch and Dent options from Berkey, also. You can get a great deal on a Berkey with minor cosmetic issues!

Water testing in our town recently came up. Everyone has wells but there are strips of uranium. This is really useful for little ones that can’t reach the fridge dispenser yet.
