As a family who likes to stay active, a quality jogging stroller was on our must-haves when we compiled our list of baby essentials. We received a great jogging stroller when our little guy was born, but after 2 years and many, many miles, it has seen better days. Since I'm training for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon weekend, where I'll be raising money for the kids of St. Jude, I knew I wanted the top of the line jogging stroller to make training a little easier on me. That's when PishPoshBaby offered to send me the Baby Jogger Summit X3 (at no cost to facilitate an honest review). I'd heard great things about the Baby Jogger brand, so I was interested to see if it would live up to my expectations.
First things first, let's talk assembly because I like to know what I'm in for when I receive a new product. I used to have my husband handle the assembly of baby gear, but I figured that some of the ladies out there might want to know if they can assemble this stroller themselves, so I wanted to put together the Summit X3 on my own.
Baby Jogger Summit X3
Admittedly, I was relieved to see that most of the stroller was already assembled. All I had to do was remove a bit of protective wrapping, install the wheels and attach the canopy. Not bad at all, and I had it done within 10 minutes. My first impression was that the Summit X3 was SMOOTH. This stroller just glides across the room and turns on a dime. I was immediately impressed.
Now, let's take a look at this stroller in more detail. When I'm shopping for a stroller, one of the most important things I look at is the seat. I want my little guy to be comfortable - after all, he won't want to ride in the stroller for very long if he's uncomfortable, and that can lead to major meltdowns - not good when you're a few miles from home on a run.
The seat on the Summit X3 is nice and roomy and accommodates a child from birth to age 5, with a maximum weight of 75 pounds (WOW!) and a height of 44 inches. Of course, you wouldn't jog or run with a newborn in this stroller until they reach about 6 months old and have good head/neck control. This padded seat measures 21 inches from the base of the seat back to the top, and 24 inches to the top of the canopy. The seat is 10 inches deep and about 11 inches wide, and there are 9 inches from the front of the seat to the bottom of the foot rest. The footrest portion is made of a heavy duty fabric (plastic-y type of material) that's resistant to velcro snags and general wear and tear from little legs and shoes. It's also super easy to wipe clean. There's an adjustable 5 point harness to keep your little one safely restrained, and in case you're wondering, my two year old cannot undo the buckle (score!). You'll have to rethread the shoulder straps to adjust the shoulder height level, but I didn't find this terribly difficult. The shoulder straps also have integrated padding to protect their tender little neck skin from straps.
Speaking of being comfortable in the seat, the Baby Jogger Summit X3 reclines into a nearly flat position in case your little one is so comfy that he or she decides to take a nap in their stroller. To recline the seat you'll just pinch the clamp behind the seat and slide it down to your desired recline level. It's quick and easy to recline the seat and return it back to sitting position.
If your little one is taking a nap on a hot day, you can simply lift the retractable weather cover to reveal a vented panel for air to flow through. I love that this gives a nice big view of baby and allows for plenty of ventilation.
Living in Florida, another thing I look for in strollers is a big canopy and the Baby Jogger Summit X3 does not disappoint. This is truly a full coverage canopy, but it still gives you plenty of ways to check on your child with two peek-a-boo windows. Normally I prefer for these windows to be mesh, but this is actually a nice feature in case of the very frequent rain we experience in SW Florida. Just be warned, these windows have hook & look closure so it can be a little noisy to check on your sleeping tot. On the sides of the canopy are two awesome ventilation panels to keep your child cool. I LOVE this feature and my little guy loves being able to look around a bit better thanks to these mesh panels.
You can customize your Baby Jogger Summit X3 by using the universal accessory mounting bracket which allows you to accessorize your stroller with ease. Optional (sold separately) accessories include a belly bar, snack tray, cup holder, and infant car seat adapter.
Let's talk more about the functionality of this stroller from the perspective of the parent/caregiver/runner. First up, the handlebar. The Baby Jogger Summit X3 has a single handlebar with a hand operated rear drum brake (for increased control on hilly terrain - not such a problem for me in Florida, but a nice feature nonetheless). The only downside to this is that the cable to operate the brake runs along the handlebar so you inevitably grip it while you're steering. This doesn't really irk me since I'm left handed and tend to grip the stroller more with my left hand, but my husband finds it a bit annoying since he always grips the stroller with his right hand while running. The handlebar is ergonomically designed but non-adjustable, so super tall or short parents take note. I'm 5'4" and my husband is 5'11" and both of us have no problem pushing/running with this stroller. The handlebar also has a wipe clean grip so it's easy to clean and won't wear down, unlike foam wrapped handlebars you might see. You'll also notice the jogging strap {runaway strap} in the image above/below. This strap is attached to the bottom of the stroller on the rear wheel bar and loops around the jogger's wrist in case of a fall. This way, if you fall the stroller will come to a stop and not "runaway". It's important to note since the strap is attached to the rear wheel bar instead of the handlebar, the stroller won't tip backwards putting you or the baby at risk.
Let's get a closer look at the wheels on the Baby Jogger Summit X3 since they're an integral part of the functionality of this fine stroller . There are two 16" rear pneumatic wheels and one 12" front quick-release pneumatic wheel, all with sealed ball bearings. In a nutshell, the wheels are fabulous. You'll want need pneumatic tires for a jogging stroller to help compensate for bumpy terrain. These wheels will provide a smooth ride for your little one and they'll also make it easier for you to push the stroller (heck yes! says the mom that doesn't need any extra resistance when she's pushing a heavy toddler). There is also all-wheel independent suspension to ensure your baby has a bump-free ride.
When you're ready to go for a run with your Summit X3, all you have to do is activate the remote action swivel lock by pulling the lever on the side of the stroller upwards to lock the front wheel in place. This is an excellent feature so you don't have to bend down and manually lock the front wheel, potentially touching a dirty or muddy wheel in the process. When you're done running, simply flip the lever back down and the front wheel will swivel at will.
The parking brake on the Summit X3 is located on the rear wheel bar and is initiated by flipping the red tab upward. It's not the easiest tab to flip up and you might not be able to do it quickly in flip flops, but it's definitely not complicated. You got a little peek at the storage basket in the photos above, so let's talk storage.
There's a very adequate storage basket underneath the seat and it fits my moderately sized diaper bag just fine. Baby Jogger curved the frame so that the basket is easily accessible and it gives you much more room to get your stuff in and out of the basket. Thanks to the elastic siding on the basket, you can also access it from either side. There's also a seat back storage pocket for your smaller items.
The fold of the Summit X3 is perhaps one of my very favorite features. It's SO easy! All you have to do is pull up on the handle located on the seat and the stroller basically folds itself. Now, there are red "safety straps" (located at the back of the stroller below the seat) that you can connect to make sure the stroller doesn't fold inadvertently, but I really haven't utilized those much. When traveling, there's a storage strap that you can utilize to keep the frame folded - it's simply a matter of looping the hook & loop strap through a D-ring on the frame - super easy. Pictured above is the folded stroller in my compact SUV. As you can see, we still have plenty of space. At 26 pounds, this stroller is very manageable to lift in and out of the car.
As you can see, my little guy is quite content riding in our new Baby Jogger Summit X3. We've been using this stroller for the past 4 weeks and have logged quite a few miles, and he hasn't protested a bit. He's 25 months, 36.5 inches tall, and 30 pounds (and pretty cute, if I say so myself) in these photos.
Overall, I think the Baby Jogger Summit X3 is an absolutely fantastic jogger/stroller. It handles like a dream and is so easy to push, even with a heavy toddler. I'm a firm believer that with strollers you get what you pay for. The Summit X3 will set you back anywhere from $250 and up, depending on whether you're shopping for the 2014 model or newer, but it's worth every penny considering the quality and how long you'll be able to use this stroller due to the high weight limit. I would absolutely recommend this stroller for any family looking for an excellent jogger.

The wheels seem awesome which we need awesome jogging wheels for where we live because we have lots of bumpy roads and no sidewalks. I love that you don't have to bend over to lock the front wheel in place. The one I have right now, you do. It's kind of a pain to bend over every time. Also, it looks really easy to recline the seat back. Very nice!

When I had my first son almost five years ago, I was looking at an older model of Baby Jogger's jogging stroller. I ended up receiving a different brand, but have had my eye on this one for a while! My next little guy is due next month, and I am glad we have people like you to show honest reviews of products like this. I love the way this stroller folds- it looks like it would not be terrible for travel like my previous jogger was. The huge basket is a plus. The handlebars are amazing, the brake would really give me peace of mind while I'm out jogging. I can't believe it holds a child up to 75 lbs!!! That's awesome!

That looks like a really nice stroller. My niece is expecting in August and I think I am as excited as her mother is. Enjoying looking at baby stuff.
