Adventure Time - Lumpy Space Princess Birthday Cake!

    adventure time cake

One of my husband’s favorite TV shows is Adventure Time. Yes, I said Husband! 🙂 Although, I have to admit, I do like watching it too. We’ve had a lot of laughs while watching that show. For the past few years, I have made a character from the TV show for my hubby’s birthday cake. First it was Jake, then BMO, and now my friends… I have tackled Lumpy Space Princess (or LSP for short). If your little one(s) or hubby loves this show, follow along to make your very own Lumpy Space Princess cake!

    ATC1

Bake your cake in a 9 x 13 in. pan; it will be the perfect size. When the cake has cooled, transfer it to the surface you want to use to serve the cake. I didn’t think it would fit on my cake platter, so I used a small cookie sheet. However, by the time I was done cutting all her lumps, it would have fit. So the choice is yours, either surface will work well.

Once your cake is transferred, it’s time to refer to the Internet. I suggest looking up a picture of LSP on your phone or computer to refer to when cutting out her lumps. It’s easier to have a guideline to follow, and she will look more accurate to the character. I used a sharp paring knife to cut out her shape. All the leftover cake I placed in a Tupperware bin and saved for snacks. Yum!

    ATC2

When LSP is all cut out, it’s frosting time! If you haven't already, mix up a batch of frosting and save the majority of it for the color purple. Just make sure to save a couple of spoonfuls to make a nice vibrant yellow, for her star. I purchased a black gel squeeze tube for her features. It’s hard to make black with frosting, it always looks gray. The gel tube is a nice rich, dark black. Although, be careful… when using a gel, the color tends to run and bleed. If you can wait, a good tip is to draw her features a few minutes before you put the candles on the cake and start singing.

For the color purple, I mixed the colors slowly to make sure I got it right. I squeezed two drops of blue and two drops of red at a time. I repeated that 5 times and it matched beautifully. It will depend on how much frosting you make, to see how many drops you will need. Just remember though, to make the drops in the same size and even in number. The yellow is easy, just put about 2 or 3 drops in and you can always add more if you need to make it brighter.

    ATC3

Now that your frosting is ready, use the purple to cover the top and sides of the cake. Make sure you save enough to make her arms. Once LSP is covered in her beautiful purple cloak, it’s time for the star! I used a cake decorating set with a small circular tip to draw the star, and then I filled it in.

    ATC4

Don’t forget about those fun little arms! I loaded up my cake decorating tube with the leftover purple frosting and changed the tip to a rectangular shaped piece. This way I just layered the frosting in the shape I made, to create her 3D arms. You can look through your decorating set and see what shape tip would best make her arms. After I layered up her arms and got the height I was looking for, I then used a knife to make her fingers. With the knife, I just pulled back some of the frosting and lifted it out. It was as easy as that!

    ATC5

There you have it! You can either decide to draw LSP’s facial features now, or later. Congrats, you just made your very own Lumpy Space Princess cake! Your child, or husband, will be sure to love it!

Now how adorable is this?? I laughed so hard when I saw it, but it's really cute. I'd like to make this for my brother's birthday next month, I know he'd get a kick out of it! I think I'm going to see if I can print out a picture to use as template. Thanks for a wonderful idea!
