iCoffee Steam Brew Coffee Maker Review

This post may contain affiliate links. Click here for more information.

I love a good cup of coffee in the morning. Actually, I NEED a good cup of coffee EVERY morning. I look forward to it and it's just the perfect start to my day. We've been using a traditional coffee pot for the past several years, so when iCoffee by Remington reached out to me about reviewing their revolutionary new iCoffee Steam brew, I definitely wanted to give it a try.

I was sent an iCoffee Steam brew to review (at no cost to facilitate this post):

    iCoffee Steam Brew

    iCoffee Steam Brew

Here's a little background information from iCoffee about their Steam brew and what makes it so different from traditional drip brewers:

iCoffee took seven years and over 1,257 prototypes to perfect. iCoffee's patented Steam Brew technology makes it the first coffee brewer ever to utilize steam jets inside the coffee brew basket. The SteamBrew™ jets first pre-steam the coffee and then stir the coffee throughout the brewing process so each of the coffee grounds is completely suspended and surrounded by hot water at the perfect brewing temperature. Next, a rich coffee crema forms, indicating the elimination of bitter and acidic aftertastes.

When I first un-boxed the iCoffee brewer, I was impressed with the sleek design. It looks like a traditional drip brewer in many ways and has most of the function buttons and timers you'd expect to see.

    iCoffee

I got busy brewing my first pot right away. As instructed I removed all labels and cleaned the carafe and all surfaces to get ready to brew. According to iCoffee, their SteamBrew™ technology enables maximum flavor extraction so users should experiment to determine the optimal ratio of water to coffee based on their personal tastes. For the first pot they recommend using your usual amount of coffee, then adding more of less for subsequent brews. I went ahead and followed this advice, brewing a pot with 6 cups of water and 5 tablespoons of coffee.

    iCoffee

The first difference I noted between my traditional KitchenAid drip brewer and the iCoffee steam brewer was that you're not supposed to use a coffee filter. The iCoffee has a Gold Tone brew basket that acts as a filter and this is the where the "i" for innovation in iCoffee happens. The brew basket can be removed from the machine to fill with coffee grounds, then it just snaps into place. Speaking of grounds, iCoffee recommends using medium to coarse grounds since their patented SteamBrew Extraction Technology will lead to increased "extracted coffee essence" (read: sediment) in your cup. If you use very fine grounds they'll slip right through into your coffee pot. If you're not into a large amount of sediment in your cup, the iCoffee also comes with an optional filter that can snapped right onto the carafe to help decrease the amount of sediment making it through from the brewer.

The second difference I noticed was from the Steam Brew Extraction Technology. The brew basket has a great see-through window so you can see the magic happening. You can see the water coming into the basket and the steam rotationally swirling the grounds. While the coffee was brewing (and afterwards) I noticed the aroma of coffee was much more noticeable in our home. It smelled wonderful and I was excited to see how the coffee would taste.

    iCoffee

They are not kidding about the extracted coffee essence! I chose to use the optional filter and am pretty glad I did. A little bit of sediment still made it through but I was able to collect most of it right in this handy little filter. The coffee in the carafe was a bit richer in color than our traditional pots of coffee, and like I said before it smelled fantastic. iCoffee mentions that your coffee will have a rich crema but I didn't notice any crema to speak of. Honestly, I wouldn't even have known what crema was, but I happened to catch an episode of "Dangerous Grounds" on the travel channel the other night and was enlightened about crema and a host of other coffee tidbits. Despite the lack of crema, the taste of the coffee was delicious. It was smooth and flavorful and I really enjoyed it. The only real drawback, if you want to call it that, is that the machine doesn't fit underneath our upper kitchen cabinets. We have a 14 inch clearance and the machine is just a tab bit taller than that so it can't just sit on the counter top unless it's a space where there isn't an upper cabinet. This isn't a big problem for us since we do have counter space for it, but just be aware if you have a smaller kitchen space and lower upper cabinets.

Now I am by no means a coffee connoisseur, but I do enjoy coffee each morning and the iCoffee definitely makes a great pot of coffee! The clean-up is a bit more labor intensive since you aren't merely throwing the filter with grounds into the trash, but it's totally worth it to me. The iCoffee Steambrewer has definitely earned a spot on our counter.

Buy it: You can purchase the iCoffee Steambrewer at multiple retailers like Bed Bath and Beyond, or on Amazon.

ICoffee System uses steam to extract the exact taste from coffee, preventing the bitter taste that drip machines produce.

I am not a coffee drinker, mostly because of the bitter after taste, so the idea that this coffee maker gets rid of this definitely piqued my curiosity. Even if I didn't end up loving coffee after trying it, my husband and many of our out of town visitors love coffee, so it would be used often.

Is the brew basket glass or plastic? With all of the hullabaloo surrounding chemicals leaching out of plastic, I'd love to find a coffee maker with no plastic parts that come into contact with the hot water or coffee. This sounds like it would taste a lot like French-pressed coffee, since that basically steeps in hot water before being forced through a filter and into your cup., so this would be a quick and easy French-Press. I'm intrigued.

I learned why coffee can taste bitter; over extraction of some parts of the coffee grounds. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the iCoffee Coffee Maker since all of the grounds are evenly utilized.

This coffee maker sounds wonderful. i really enjoy coffee anytime of the day. for me, i think that i would have to use the extra filter so that it wasn't as strong, but then again, i also use creamer in my coffee, but i don't put too much creamer in it, as to not taste the coffee. with this coffee maker i don't think that i would have that problem. Thank you for posting about this.

you don't have to worry about bitter tasting coffee because the rotational steamer technology part of the machine makes sure that your coffee is nice and smooth every time.

I also checked out the iCoffee website and read more about what you mentioned about the coffee maker extracting the best flavors. For instance, perhaps my drip coffee is too acidic. I think iCoffee would be good for those with sensitive stomachs.

Well hello iCoffee!! It's amazing that it took them 7 years to perfect a beauty like this! And just reading about the how regular coffee pots are more acidic because of the drip system...well my cup I'm drinkin right now isn't tasting that great anymore..

I learneded that iCoffee uses the goodness of steam to extract the most exquisite coffee flavours while rotational hot water jets continuously stir the grounds, compared to iMac which fails the coffee challenge miserably again. I also learneded that unlike an iMac an iCoffee does not require internet access and helps conserve bandwidth usage; I think that is icing on the cake.

      So every time you make a pot of coffee, you have to clean the brew basket, the glass carafe and the (optional) filter? Do you clean inside of the machine where the brew basket goes, as well? It probably is best to hand-wash it all? It seems like a lot of work for one pot of coffee... but if you say it's worth it.... {smile}

Yes, I clean the brew basket, the carafe, and the little filter with every pot. I don't clean inside the machine because I never did that with my old machine either and figure why start now 🙂 I hand wash it all and it's really not THAT much additional work. It's just a bit grittier since you can't just dump the paper filter full of grounds into the trash first.

They call it "essence" and yes, to have some sediment (it's not really grounds - it's more like super fine silt) in your cup is normal with this machine. It didn't really bother me, but I used the optional filter to decrease the amount.

with the singel serve machines the pump can quickly force hot water through finely ground coffee at excessive speeds, resulting in over-extraction of unwanted acidic and bitter coffee oils and is actually more expensive in long run!!

I would LOVEEEE TO wind the icoffee maker. I am in MUCH need of a new Good working coffee pot. I will be needing one soon, and after reading your review on it, it sounds like an awesome machine. My biggest concern when looking to purchase a coffee machine, is the creama! usually you only see this on extremely expensive espresso machines. but this is the first time I've heard of a good priced daily coffee drip machine being able to produce the crema! Its all about the CREMA, that's what makes a good coffee, and also grinding your grounds fresh!

I learned that The Rich Coffee Crema forms when the coffee is steambrewing. That rich coffee crema helps ensure an "impossibly smooth” tasting cup of coffee. But you wont see it in your cup because by the time it hits the carafe the crema bubbles have burst and all you are left with is that impossibly smooth coffee flavor.

You have us most curious about the smell and taste of coffee brewed via this method. My husband has a siphon coffee maker, as well as other types of coffee makers, and we've not yet seen this in person. It'd be fun to try different beans and record the different attributes, then look it all over afterwards.
