A few months ago our little one became ill for the first time. It was unbelievably scary for me. I felt completely helpless. I needed to take his temperature but he was already so uncomfortable and crying non-stop that I dreaded it. I wish I'd had an Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer at the time.
Exergen Corporation is a world leader in industrial and medical non-invasive temperature technology. They create non-invasive temperature measurement devices designed to provide higher accuracy & reliability with less invasiveness and at a lower cost.
The Exergen TemporalScanner is an infrared thermometer, which reads a temperature in just TWO seconds. Just a gentle stroke across the forehead is all you need to receive a quick, accurate reading. This is a totally non-invasive system which is fast and won't cause any additional discomfort to your baby.
Here is information regarding accuracy and how the TemporalScanner works from Exergen's website:
The TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.
The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment.
The best place to measure temperature is the center of the heart, but this can be done only under a doctor's supervision. Doctors know that measurement of the blood temperature in a major artery accurately reflects true body temperature. The TemporalScanner Thermometer is designed to measure the temperature of the skin surface over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head.
The temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery, directly leading from the aorta, the main trunk of the arterial system. It offers constant blood flow. It is the only such artery positioned close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed to take an accurate measurement. It is easy to use because it is ideally located at the front portion of the forehead. The TemporalScanner is easier and gentler to use than other types of measurement devices such as oral, rectal, underarm and in-ear thermometers because it is truly non-invasive.
To use the TemporalScanner just gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead. Doing so crosses over the temporal artery and allows the thermometer to capture an accurate body temperature.
In my completely unscientific experiment, I tested this thermometer against traditional digital thermometers that I had on hand and each time the readings were within 0.1 or 0.2 degrees of one another. I feel like I'm getting a very accurate reading with the Exergen TemporalScanner.
When your child is sick the last thing you want to do is cause them more discomfort. I love being able to take my little one's temperature so quickly and painlessly. I've had other thermometers where I've had to wait minutes (yes, minutes!) for a reading! I'm so impressed by how quickly this thermometer works. I also love that I can use the TemporalScanner when my baby is asleep. No more probing through clothing to access his armpit with a pointy thermometer and no need for rectal readings. Your baby can remain sound asleep and in just two quick seconds you'll have a result.
The Exergen TemporalScanner is also really affordable for the amount of technology it employs. Most retailers have it listed for under $40!

With a gentle stroke of the forehead it captures the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, taking 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate. With its patented Arterial Heat Balance system the TemporalScanner measures ambient temperatures, mathematically replaces the small temperature loss from cooling at the skin, and displays an accurate arterial temperature.

I would love one of these! So much easier and more convenient than using the old fashion thermometers! Especially with an infant! Thank you for the review. I was really sceptical about them and their accuracy, because doctors are always saying that a rectal temp is the most accurate. But this review really cleared up the questions I had about this thermometer.
The mom who lives in perpetual chaos says
I have been looking to purchase a temporal thermometer but was concerned about accuracy. I know ear thermometers had some controversy over accuracy and needing to be positioned correctly. Thanks for the review, I will be looking to purchase this one as my youngest hates having her temperature taken.
Puddles and Poop says
When my three year old was a baby, I hated taking his temp. because I had to do it rectally. It was the same for my second. With our third baby coming, I am really considering buying one of these...especially if they are more accurate.

As a grandma, I go way back to the dark ages, so I am so happy to hear that there is a thermometer that can read a temperature in 2 seconds by only passing it over the forehead. I sure beats everything I've ever used.

I think this would be a really cool temperature reader, we have the old standard and it is hard to get a reliable reading.

Shelly Johnson says
I am in desperate need of one of these. I have seen then, and honestly, I've been a little suspicious. I grew up thinking that only the regular thermometers worked. If it wasn't "under the tounge" it wouldn't read accurately. THEN, I had a second baby. Now we are all mom's here so, so I am *praying* I am not the only one who has gone to take a sick older child's temperature and thought "Oh, crap, did I accidentally use this thermometer in a moment of panic in the baby's bum??" I can't use THIS thing anymore. I have gone through SO many thermometers I was starting to think I needed a degree in medicine LOL
Georgia Beckman says
I am in the market for a new thermometer. When digital thermometers came out a few years ago, I started buying one as a baby shower gift for every baby shower I attended. I also made sure that all of my children had them in their homes for my grandchildren. However, it has now been a few years & it's time to get new thermometers. We currently only have a mercury thermometer in our home. I know that at least one of our daughters has no thermometer at all right now. The thing I like about this temporal thermometer is that there is no need to wake the child up to take their temperature; which is great for school days. No need to wake them up, take their temp & tell them to "Go back to sleep, you can't go to school today." This is at the top of my list! Thanks for the review.
Barbara A Ramirez says
Thank you so much for reviewing thermometers that will be used with children..you saved me so much time researching what one to buy!

I have never heard of a temporal artery thermometer, but after reading your review, I understood how it works and when I need a new thermometer, I think I will buy this kind. Thank you for your review.

I have never used these with my children. Right now we just use under the armpit to check temp since they are still too little to know to hold it under their tongue.
