Roller Coaster for Kids
My son loves all things Hot Wheels. You may remember that we upgraded his toddler bed to the Hot Wheels Toddler to Twin Race Car Bed. This was a special surprise for conquering potty training. We used Hot Wheels as rewards, so it only seemed fitting to celebrate his success with a true "big boy" bed. Several months later, he still loves those little cars.
Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster
We had the Step2 Up & Down Roller Coaster previously and my son absolutely loved it. It was such a great toy for teaching him to balance. I loved how easy it was to disassemble so I could move it indoors or outside on a whim. Now that he's turning 4, I thought it was time for an upgrade. The Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster came along just at the right time. We got the Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster a few weeks ago and assembled it while he was in preschool. I wanted it to be a surprise when he got home. It took my husband, my dad, and me about 1 hour to put it together. I'd say it's definitely a two-person job. Also, although you don't technically need one, it will be easier to assemble if you have a drill.
I couldn't wait to see the look on his face when he saw it for the first time. I wasn't let down!
Features of the Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Roller Coaster
The Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster by Step2 features a non-slip step ramp. So, your child can push the car up to the top of the platform all by themselves. Then they just climb into the easy-entry Hot Wheels coaster car to sail down the extra-long, 14-foot coaster track.
The platform is 30 inches above the ground. I was a little nervous that my toddler wouldn't know how to climb into the car. Of course, he mastered it the very first time. The car is outfitted with hand grips, footrests, and a high seat back for comfort.
You may notice that we have our coaster assembled on the grass. We chose to do this since we are staying with my parents right now. We didn't want to re-landscape their yard. In general, playground equipment should not be placed on hard surfaces. This includes grass since it can turn to hard-packed earth. Therefore, mulch, wood chips, fine sand, or gravel would be better options. You'll need at least 6 feet of clearance at the end of the coaster for your little one to coast.
The Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster is recommended for ages 3 and up and I think that's pretty accurate. My son is a little over 3.5 years old. He probably would have done just fine with this toy from his 3rd birthday. The weight limit is 80 pounds. This is awesome since there are quite a few older neighborhood kids who have come out of the woodwork to take turns riding the coaster.
I know my son is going to enjoy this roller coaster for quite some time. I'm sure his sister will too, once she's old enough to partake in the fun. Thanks to the durable poly construction I know this toy is going to last for years and years.
2023 Update: How did it hold up?
My son and daughter loved this roller coaster for quite a few years. In 2018 I donated it to their preschool. It is still used to this day and has been enjoyed by hundreds of children. Although it has faded a from the Florida sun, it's still in fine shape.
Get it: The Hot Wheels Extreme Thrill Coaster is no longer available on most sites. BUT, you can still get the Extreme Coaster which we've also used. It's also a ton of fun for kids!
