I don't know about you, but I start to get a little nervous when the weather starts cooling off. The impeding cold weather means our daily trips to the park and the beach are coming to a close, and we'll soon be confined to the inside walls of our home for the day. I try my best to get creative, offer new and exciting activities, and take the boys on regular errands for a change of scene, but usually, Fall/Winter means extreme boredom and cabin fever. But wait, I have a secret weapon this year! Monster Factory sent us their Kids VW Camper Van Tent at no cost to facilitate this review, and things have been quite exciting around here since it arrived!
I've been fairly opposed to large and obnoxious play toys, for the sake of space and practicality, but the beauty of this van is that it completely collapses and can be stored in a circular bag that could slide underneath the couch. Because this van is collapsible and transportable, you could take it anywhere, like to an outside play date, the beach, or camping! We really thought about bringing this with us when we went camping as a family last month, but because the two door flaps don't zip closed, we worried about big bugs or animals climbing in at night, or little boys rolling out. However, it is perfect for the living room floor!
There are four poles that are inserted into the four corners of the van in order to keep it fully open. After lifting up a velcro pocket, the rods slide in smoothly and stay in place.
This play tent is actually licensed by VW, and is a scaled down version based on the exact dimensions of a 1964 T1 Camper Van. There is a flap in the back and on the side that lift up to enter, as well as windows in the front that can be toggled up to reveal the mesh underneath.
My boys were head over heels ecstatic about playing in their new van!! They instantly began running in and out, playing pretend, and going on all sorts of excursions to new places.
Soon they had brought in all their favorite books, pillows, blankets, and toys, and were having a cozy afternoon inside! It has since become the first thing they do every morning, and they really have some good times inside.
There is so much space inside! I climbed inside to see for myself, and I could actually lay down flat inside if I wanted to. I love toys that allow parents to play along (if you're willing to get cozy).
Now, I have complete faith in this van being a sturdy and reliable play toy that could last and last, but I need to mention that my boys are probably a little more crazy and destructive than most other kids I know and it didn't take more than an hour before they had bent one of the structural rods. When I pulled it out of the van and tried to bend it back to straight, the inner connector piece completely snapped, and it couldn't hold its shape anymore. Worried that this might happen again, and not wanting to give up on this really cool toy, we found a dowel rod at a home improvement store, and cut it down to the measurements of the plastic rods. With these new wooden rods inserted, the van functions as perfectly as it did before, and I don't have to worry about anything else snapping or breaking. Perhaps the company might consider making their plastic connectors into something that won't bend and break, like a metal or even just a solid plastic, so that no one else has this same problem, but then again, I might just have some really crazy toddlers!
My husband and I have both been trying to collapse this back into the shape it came in, but we're still having a hard time. Even when following the directions exactly, we can't seem to fold it in the right way, and are just bending the bottom structural rods. We'll keep working on it, but I can't say that folding back on itself is a breeze quite yet. For now, with the rods removed, it can still collapse to the floor, and then it can be stored behind the couch or against a wall.
The details on this Kids VW Camper Van Tent are so fun! I love the windows that can be rolled up and held with toboggles, the shiny printed look of the wheels, the license plate, and the vibrant color. In all, we really love having this super cool van, especially with the temperature dropping, as we're finding great toys that will entertain the kids this Fall/Winter.
