Getting kids to keep their rooms clean is a challenge. It can be even more of a challenge to organize all of their toys, books, and precious keepsakes. I've partnered with ABRAMS Books for this sponsored post to show you how we maximize storage space with these kids’ closet organization ideas, inspired by the new book in the bestselling Wimpy Kid series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball.
When we moved into our new home last year, getting an organized household was high on my priority list. Our last home had hardly any storage, so I wanted to make sure I had plenty in this new house and that I maximized all of the space we did have. Getting custom closets installed was probably one of the best decisions and investments we made.
When I decided to purchase a closet organization system for each of the kids' closets, I wanted to make sure it was fully functional and would suit their needs. I let my little guy sketch a picture of the perfect closet, and I was delighted to see that he was on the same page as me. He said he wanted one side to be for clothes and one side to be for toys and games.
Kids' Closet Organization
What I ended up with was a closet organization system that consists of several sets of shelves for half of the width of the closet and hanging rods on the other side for clothing. The shelves are really where all the magic happens, though. Instead of having various toys, books, and collectibles scattered around the room, we now have a place for everything. Special items like trophies or built building block sets have their own shelves instead of being scattered around the room or on dresser tops. They're actually better protected in the closet too.
When I selected the design, I knew I wanted to incorporate storage bins into the design to hold various items. They're clean looking and super functional. I ordered several sets on Amazon, and they've been fantastic.
One of the genius ideas that my son had was turning the bins sideways to house his book collection. That way, he can see the titles and organize them in a way that makes sense to him.
One thing that he really loves is watching his library grow. Recently, he's really gotten into the Diary of Wimpy series and ABRAMS Books just sent us the brand new title. Wrecking Ball, book number 14 in this mega-popular series from #1 international bestselling author Jeff Kinney, is on shelves now, and my son was thrilled to get his hands on a copy. This series is ideal for ages 8-12, but my 7.5-year-old is a great reader and finds this series easy to read and follow.
In this book, an unexpected inheritance means that the Heffley family can do some major renovations to their home. Just like when we built our home, the Heffleys come to find that home improvement isn't for the faint of heart. You never really know what sort of problems are going to arise when you take on a home project, but something always crops up! In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball, the Heffleys find toxic mold, rotten wood, unwelcome critters, and even more problems than you can imagine. If you've ever done a home improvement project, you'll definitely be able to commiserate with the Heffley family.
I'm thankful our closet renovation went a lot better than the Heffley family's home remodeling. I'd love to hear how you organize your kids' things and whether or not you've got any home improvement projects on your radar. Now that we’ve tackled the closets, my son wants to sketch out plans for an outdoor kitchen! I told him that may take a while for us to accomplish, but he said it needs to be done by summer. I guess I’ve got to add it to our to-do list! Be sure to pick up your copy of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball; it'd be a great gift this holiday season.
