My husband has been cursed with bad circulation his entire adult life. With the combination of Minnesota winters, working outdoors as a commercial electrician, and poor circulation, you can guess his feet are in bad shape. Winters are hard on his whole body, but especially his feet. Even when he's wearing heavy duty boots, he comes home and has to let his toes thaw out after work. I knew that ThermaCELL ProFLEX Heavy Duty Heated Insoles would be the perfect Christmas gift for him!
ThermaCELL Heated Insoles Review
He wears an 11.5 size boot, so the XX-Large size was the way to go. However, they're available in men's 3.5 all the way to 13 (or women's 4.5-14) and you can trim the edges so they fit perfectly! Upon opening the box, I found the insoles, two rechargeable lithium-ion polymer batteries, one smart charging case, one wall charger, one USB cable, one drawstring travel bag, and the instructions.
The wall charger is unique because it has spots for a battery on each side. That way you don't need to charge one at a time, or take up two plug-ins.
The battery can last up to 8.5 hours on one charge, which is great for a full work day. Plus, it takes less than two hours to charge! The batteries are slightly padded which makes for comfortable wear right at the heel of the foot.
Once the batteries are charged and placed in the insoles, you may think it would be difficult to charge the batteries without taking the insoles out entirely. However, ThermaCELL has made it easier by putting small tabs on the batteries that help you remove them. That way you can reach inside the boots or shoes and take out the battery without having to remove the insoles themselves.

Of course it wouldn't be a thorough review without trying these heated insoles, and they did not disappoint! We've had some very cold weather this week (in the teens and low twenties!) so I took the kids outside in their snow gear and I tried out the insoles.
I downloaded the ThermaCELL app which allows you to run the insoles with Bluetooth directly from your phone. This is a fantastic feature because you don't need to carry around a little remote. Plus, you can change the temperature of the insoles without needing to access them or the batteries. And who doesn't carry their phone on them at all times, right?
I'm excited to say the insoles worked great. Within minutes I could feel my feet warming up. They didn't make my feet hot, but they kept them comfortably warm, even after we'd been outside for quite awhile. This is a feature that makes complete sense-I wouldn't want my feet to get hot and sweat, and then cool down and freeze. The temperatures of the insoles range from 100°F to 115°F, which felt great to my cold toes! The app also lets you know the battery life of the insoles.
I know these insoles are going to be a huge relief for my husband. Currently he's working on a new high school and nothing is enclosed yet, so that makes for very long, cold days. I have 2 issues though. 1....what if they get wet? Say you are out in the yard and step, and it’s a deep puddle instead of grass. The water gets in your shoe. What happens??
2.... litho batteries catch fire quite often. They’re warnings all over them. Are these fire hazards?

Thanks for your comment!! 🙂 So the insoles are not meant to get wet-I would use them with waterproof boots or shoes if possible. I would immediately remove the battery and let them air dry if they do get wet. The insoles are highly water resistant but not waterproof.
As far as the batteries, as with any lithium battery there is a risk for burns. ThermaCELL includes this warning with their product: "CAUTION: BE AWARE OF BURN POSSIBILITIES
Properly use ThermaCELL Heated Insoles ProFLEX Heavy Duty according to instructions.
Users of ThermaCELL Heated Insoles ProFLEX Heavy Duty need to be aware of early sensations of a
burn, including when an area of a foot becomes hot, or when any area of your foot feels like you are
standing on a small pebble or pointed object and may or may not feel hot.
If you feel the early warning of a foot burn, immediately discontinue use of the Insole and make certain
your foot is not at risk of being burned. See a physician immediately if you think you have a burn."
