Now that my kids are past the bottles and burp rags stage, I thought it would be nice to have a diaper bag that looked - well, less like a diaper bag. When I had the opportunity to try out the beautiful Newlie Sophia diaper bag I jumped at the chance. I've partnered with Newlie to share all the details on this chic bag!
Since my daughter was born I've had a couple different diaper bags. They've always looked like your standard diaper bag with bottle pockets on the outside and a cutesy little print. There's been nothing wrong with the bags I've used in the past but now that my kids are a little older (four and one) I decided it was time to get a more sophisticated looking bag. Now don't get me wrong-I'm not a super fancy dresser and I spend most days with just my kids, but I still want to look nice when I do get out of the house. I started looking for a bag that showcases my personal style while still being functional, and found Newlie.
Newlie is a fairly young company, but their CEO and lead designer Leslie Newton isn't new to the diaper bag game. She actually created the well-known timi & leslie diaper bag company in 1999 and then moved on to start Newlie. I love supporting businesses created and run by strong women, and I was excited to receive the Sophia diaper bag.
Newlie Sophia Diaper Bag
Before I even received the Sophia in the mail, I fell in love with the print. The combination of classic black and white stripes and faux leather coordinate so well and give the bag a crisp, clean look. Since I feel like my life with two toddlers is a bit of a (literal and figurative) mess most days, I'll take any semblance of being put-together that I can!
The interior of the Sophia is water resistant (YES!) and a nice light color which makes it easy to find things. My diaper bag usually becomes a black hole for crumbs and mismatched socks, but I'm going to do my best to keep this gorgeous bag clean. A matching, cushioned changing pad fits in one of the interior pockets. Now that my kids are a bit older and I'm not changing newborn-poo diapers every hour I think I'll remove it and use that pocket for the iPad.
One of my favorite features of this bag is Newlie's signature interior insulated pocket. It would be perfect for bottles when baby is small, and I plan to use it for snacks! Snacks are a must-have with toddlers unless you want to run through a drive-thru every day, and this pocket will keep things cool for hours.
This is a typical look at what I pack in our diaper bag for a day out. We've got to have water bottles for everyone (because Heaven FORBID they have to share drinks), snacks, my wallet, diapers & wipes, and a couple hair supplies. We're getting through Minnesota winter here, and the combination of hats and car seats makes for some crazy hair!
Everything fits easily into the bag and it's all accessible. I love that I can zip it shut so there's no worry of things falling out. I really appreciate the interior bottle holders which work great for water bottles also. The other diaper bags I've used had bottle pockets on the outside but it's nice to hide them on the inside.
Our snacks get zipped up in the insulated pocket and stay cool while we're out and about. Plus, I don't have to wash extra baggies or containers when we get home!
Another feature I love about the Newlie Sophia diaper bag is the interior key fob. I can't tell you the number of times I've gotten to our vehicle and had to search for my keys in pockets, the black hole of a diaper bag, or the stroller. Now every time I get out of the vehicle, I snap my keys to the key fob and I can't possibly misplace them!
Carrying the Newlie Sophia
There are two ways to wear this diaper bag-over the shoulder or as a backpack. Yes, you read that right-this bag can be hands-free! I wasn't sure if I'd utilize the detachable backpack straps but I do, all the time. Last weekend we stayed at a hotel and it was so easy to strap the bag to my back and carry kids and luggage in. I've also worn it as a backpack while shopping downtown and at our local children's museum so I can use both hands to wrangle my kids.
The straps are adjustable so you can carry the bag higher or lower depending on what's comfortable for you.
If you prefer to carry a diaper bag over the shoulder you simply detach the straps. You can store them in one of the three exterior pockets. These also come in handy for things like chapstick, lotion, and hand sanitizer. I love the look of the antique brass hardware!
The Newlie Sophia diaper bag is comfortable to wear over the shoulder. This is the main way I wear it and the straps are the perfect length. The weight of the bag (which isn't much, even when full) is distributed nicely.
I feel like this diaper bag is the perfect size. When carrying things for two toddlers as well as myself, bags can fill up pretty quickly. On the other hand, some bags are so big that everything gets buried or lost in the abyss. The Newlie Sophia diaper bag is the perfect size and keeps everything accessible. I've gotten so many compliments and a few "that's a DIAPER bag?!" exclamations as well. It's safe to say this bag has become a staple in my wardrobe and I bring it with me everywhere.
