Baby Video Monitor... Buy it or Skip it?

    video monitor

I've teamed up with Summer Infant for this post.

When I was registering for my little guy (a little over 3 years ago now... where has the time gone?!), a friend took at look at my list and told me to scratch off the $30 audio monitor I'd chosen and recommended adding a video monitor. Truthfully, I thought the video monitoring was overkill. Wouldn't audio monitoring be sufficient? She told me I'd thank her later and I decided I might as well register for one... if someone bought it then great, and if not, I'd decide later whether we really needed it or not. Fast forward a few months later to when the Wubba was a newborn. I was thrilled to have that video monitor! There were so many times that he cried out in his sleep and I would have went rushing into his room when in reality he was sound asleep. That's hours of sleep saved my friends!

Having a baby video monitor has also proven to be an added safety feature in our nursery. The first time my son pulled up to stand, he was in his crib. I heard him wake up from his nap and was watching him coo in his crib, when all of the sudden he rolled over and pulled himself up against the crib railing. Had I not seen him do it on the monitor, I might not have lowered the crib mattress in time before he suffered a fall. A few years later I watched him try to climb out of his crib and decided it was then time to transition to a toddler bed.

Video monitors have come a long way in the past few years. Technology is constantly changing and manufacturers are adding amazing features to these devices. Summer Infant, the leading brand of baby video monitors, is no exception. They sent me a Summer Infant Sharp View HD (at no cost) for our new little lady and I'm in awe of the crazy amount of features they were able to pack into such a relatively compact unit!

    Video Monitor

The Summer Infant Sharp View HD Video Monitor features a HUGE 5 inch color LCD flat-screen display with the best picture quality available in baby monitors. That's because this monitor goes beyond the normal "SD" display by offering parents and caregivers the ability to see their loved little ones in high definition.

    video monitor

See the difference? My last video monitor's display was quite grainy. I can't wait to see my new little lady on this portable monitor in brighter, sharper clarity. The screen resolution on the monitor is 800 x 480 (versus others who have 480 x 320) in both daytime AND nighttime.

    video monitor

Having the ability to see your little one during the night will give you such peace of mind. The Sharp View HD Video Monitor includes overnight, automatic night vision built right into the camera using infrared LEDs. During those wee hours of the night, you'll be able to check on your baby with a clear black and white image despite their room being low-light or completely dark. You can even set temperature alerts so you know your baby will be comfortable. If the room gets too cool or too warm, you'll be instantly notified via your monitor.

    video monitor

What if you want to monitor an entire room? No problem since the Sharp View HD Video Monitor has the ability to pan, scan, and zoom. You can remotely control the camera so that the whole room is in view. This is so helpful once your baby becomes mobile and can move more freely around the crib. It's also helpful if you're an extended monitor user (like me) and continue to monitor your toddler overnight. Once we started using the toddler bed, I was worried that our son would get up and wander so having a monitor in his room really helped ease my fears. I think this would also be a really helpful feature for those parents with two children sharing a room (maybe a toddler and a new baby). That way you could keep an eye on both of them with just one unit. If you end up wanting to monitor more than one room, you can purchase up to 3 additional camera to be added to the touchscreen monitor. The monitor can even be set to automatically video and audio scan between the rooms every 8 seconds.

    video monitor

Another thing that I love about this monitor is the two-way communication feature. Not only can you hear your baby through the monitor, you can also soothe them with the sound of your voice by speaking into the handheld monitor. Your voice will be projected through the camera that's in their room, giving them some reassurance that you're nearby. I can't tell you how many time my husband and I have used this feature to talk to one another in different rooms. I've been in the middle of changing our son's diaper in the middle of the night, only to realize my stash of diapers on his changing table were completely depleted. I was able to just talk into the camera to let my husband know I needed him to grab some diapers out of the diaper bag for me.

I'm a firm believer in the value of a good baby video monitor. If you're on the fence about whether or not you need one, I'd confidently suggest that you do. You'll rest better at night knowing your can peek in on your child at any time and you'll be able to evaluate whether or not you really need to get up and tend to your baby or if they're just making noise in their sleep. As your child grows the monitor will continue to be a valuable resource, so be sure to invest in one from a trusted source to be sure it will last for years to come.

Buy it: You can purchase the Summer Infant Sharp View HD Video Monitor on their website for $299.99 or on Amazon.com.

Win it: Summer Infant wants to give one lucky person their Sharp View HD Video Monitor!
