Although it may not feel like Spring is very near for parts of the country still buried deep in snow, it really is just around the corner! Soon enough, we'll all be sending our kids to the backyard to stretch their legs, get some fresh air, and direct some of their endless energy into good wholesome outside play! Not everyone lives close to a safe community park, but with a Step2 Play Up Gym Set, it is possible to have a little playground of your own in your backyard!
We were thrilled to be able to try out this outdoor play set, and since the weather here in Florida is always nice, we were able to set it up right away. As you can imagine, the 145 pounds of pieces were delivered in a ginormous box. Assembly was fairly straightforward, but the directions could have been a little more clear, since it they contained mostly pictures without a lot of description. It took me and my dad almost 4 hours to assemble, but that's to be expected for a product this size. Step2 recommends that you set up your Play Up Gym Set on mulch, but we haven't had a chance to add that into our yard just yet. Since our ground is nice and soft I think we'll be okay in the interim.
Its always refreshing to receive an item that looks exactly like the online listing, and this gym set is exactly what Step2 photographs it to be. The structure is sound and sturdy on its own, made from durable poly construction. Although it comes with ground anchors to secure the swing set to the ground, it can be moved later after assembly, so you aren't committed to one location in your yard. This is a really fantastic feature for us since we live in Florida and hurricanes and severe wind storms can hit hard. We can just remove the stakes and move the set into the garage when necessary.
This is a playhouse and a swing set duo, making it the ultimate backyard jungle gym. It is recommended for ages 3-6 and can entertain several children with the number of things to do. Kids can slide, swing, and slide and engage in all sorts of pretend play in this set. The red steering wheel that also doubles as a ship helm is big hit!
I feel like this play set is very safe for children since the play house is not too high off the ground and has a support bar in the back. The stairs going up to the play house are close together and sloped, and the slide has plenty of space at the end for children to find their footing and avoid falling off at the bottom.
Most importantly, the swings are made of rope and not of metal chains that can rust and pinch small fingers and skin. If you have a child that's on the smaller side, or a child younger than 3, you might want to consider getting the Step2 Infant to Toddler Swing that's compatible with this set. I've already placed an order for one since my little guy has a tendency to slide backwards on the swing, and we have another baby on the way that will sure it for years to come.
This color palette is new for Spring 2015! The existing model has been updated with these new earthy colors, which I think really blend in well with any backyard. The entire set looks like it will be able to withstand harsh weather, both heat and snow, for years and years to come.
My son has really had a blast with this since we set it up! I love being able to play with him outside on a structure that is designed for his age group, safe to play on, securely built, and inspires imagination. Hours can go by without complaint, and I can see this being a well-loved backyard activity for several years, and such a fun set to have for play groups and when friends come over.

Thank you for this wonderful and detailed review! One of the reasons we moved to the location we did was because there was a little community park down the road from us. Since we moved here several items have been deemed "unsafe" and removed =( All that's left is 2 swings and a merry go round. (They even brought in some sand for kids to play in when they took out the slide but didn't put it *in* anything so that is long gone now=( ) This would be a great place for my children as well as neighbors to have a place to have fun. I already have an infant/toddle swing that can be added to it so there's a spot for multiple ages.
I prefer the rope to chain on swings because when I was young I had a chain pinch my arm and rip out a chunk of my flesh. I still have the scar on my arm from it. And the fact that it's is only a few steps off the ground makes me feel more comfortable too, especially since I've got a climber and this will help satisfy his need to climb without giving mom and dad a heart attack.

Here in NW Washington our weather has been extremely mild this year and it's already so warm and sunny that my boys have been spending hours each day out in the backyard. With nothing else to entertain them they've spent almost all of those hours kicking balls over the fence. They seem to think the old man who lives next door enjoys throwing back their balls everyday. They might be right for now, but I fear that after another week of this, he'll refuse to return the balls. This play set looks like it would be a lot of fun and keep my three kids busy without bothering the neighbors.

Thanks for the giveaway. This would be great for my grandchildren that I live with. One is five years old and one is just six months old. I would have to order the Infant to Toddler swing for sure. This would be wonderful because we rent and if we move we can just pick it up and take it with us instead of it being permanent. I love Step 2 products and have for year and years. We used to run a day care and we bought so many Step 2 items because they are safe and durable. I have never been disappointed in their toys ranging from just a simple step stool to houses and log cabins and other playhouses. And they last and last.

I would be interested in knowing more about the preparation of the site for the Play Up Gym Set. If it says to put it on mulch, it must need a cushioned base. And how easy or difficult is it to install the anchors?

Mary, here is some information about Step2 in regards to the mulch:
OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS AND WARNINGS TO REDUCE THE
LIKELIHOOD OF SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY. Falls to a hard surface can result in serious injury or death.
Do not install playground equipment over hard surfaces such as concrete asphalt,
packed earth, grass, carpet or any other hard surface. Adult supervision required.
Also, the anchors were very easy for us to install using a mallet. Our ground is pretty soft though since it rains in Florida fairly often. Hope that helps!

This is such a cute playground. I like that it isn't too high my son is only 19 months but he is quite the little climber. It can get hard trying to be there to spot him on the taller equipment. I love that you are a step2 product rep. They are my favorite manufacturer for the larger play sets.

I prefer pictures in directions, especially when putting together big items with a lot of pieces. Seeing that they use ropes and not chains, plastic and not wood makes me happy to know it's even safer for my boys to play on.

I love that the swings have ropes to hold onto instead of chains. The assembly looks easy enough. The playhouse is adorable, especially the little red steering wheel. Lots of room for everyone. I could picture my nieces and nephew playing on this for hours and never getting bored.
