Over the past few weeks we've been playing with the Tappy Alphabet app, sponsored by TaqTeq.
I know tech use is sometimes a hot topic among parents, but my little guy seriously loves our iPad and Kindle Fire HDX. Don't get me wrong, I don't offer it to him often and he's only allowed to use it for short periods of time, but he knows how to navigate them better than I do and it seems technology use is the way of the future, so I've decided to embrace his aptitude and use these devices as learning tools. We have a variety of apps installed but some of them are a little too advanced for my toddler. I'd been looking for a more simplistic app to help me teach my son some of the basics before preschool and that's when Tappy Alphabet contacted me about their app. After reading a bit more about it, it sounded like a perfect fit.
Alphabet App for Kids
Tappy Alphabet is a simple app that helps kids learn over 100 vocabulary words on a single screen. No shuffling or swiping between pages, no advancing then having to backtrack - the entire app functions on a single colorful screen that's comprised of (you guessed it) the alphabet.
When the app is launched it immediately brings up a colorful display with all of the letters of the alphabet in upper case letters. You can see there's a upper/lower case button and megaphone on the bottom right hand corner so your child can become familiar with both upper and lower case letters and the sound that each letter makes via a professional voiceover.
All your child has to do is tap each letter and a corresponding word beginning with that letter will appear, along with an image of the item. For example, in the image above, you can see that once my little guy tapped the lowercase "a", an apple along with the word apple appeared. The voiceover will also say "A - apple", so your little guy or gal will start to learn phonics. The voice on the app is very pleasant and now that my son is starting to become more verbal, I catch him mimicking the voice over after she says certain words as he's becoming familiar with them.
The variety of words is pretty perfect. You can see some of them displayed above, but there are even more words to learn in the app since your child can tap the same letter multiple times to learn up to four words starting with each letter. This feature is really wonderful and kept the Wubba's attention for quite some time. There were a few words that made me scratch my head, like "Xebec" for "X", but I supposed there aren't a ton of choices for those oddball letters. Perhaps he'll be in a scrabble tournament someday and win a million dollars using the word "Xebec"... you never know!
I really like how intuitive this app is and that all of the functionality is on the landing page. I think a lot of the apps out there are a bit busy and overstimulating, but Tappy Alphabet is just right. I also like that we can use this app together. Once he uncovers the words, I'll call them out and he'll point at the corresponding pictures. He's getting really good at this too!
Overall, I think Tappy Alphabet is a wonderful app for young children and probably ideal for those 18 months to 4 years old. My little guy has really enjoyed playing with this app on the iPad, but it's also available on Android and Kindle Fire devices. It's definitely 99 cents well spent.
